**This is an interdisciplinary job. Series assigned to individual positions under this job will be determined based on the selectee's paramount qualifications at the time of selection.**

The Senior Research Scientist Insensitive Munitions position is assigned to the U.S. Army Armaments Research, Development and Engineering Center, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command. The Senior Research Scientist (Insensitive Munitions) will be instrumental as an independent researcher and an independent investigator specifically that include conception, initiation, originating, planning, leading and personally performing advanced/complex investigations using unique energetic material and Insensitive Munitions (IM) technology experiments to define the details of IM response and mitigation physics, chemistry, material interactions and the relationship to munitions systems design and performance.

The incumbent is a Department of the Army Senior Scientific and Professional (ST) employee engaged in Research & Development. This is a Department of the Army Executive and Senior Professional Position. Salary for Scientific and Professional (ST) positions in Army is normally between $165,842 and $174,500 . Pay is set based on consideration of selectee's current salary and other factors. The Department of the Army is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Responsibilities
Serves at the senior research scientist/engineer for Army in Insensitive Munitions technology. The incumbent supports the Army's Strategic Planning to provide necessary capabilities to Combatant Commanders in support of National security and defense strategies, and deliver firepower with minimum collateral effects, while increasing survivability of the soldier. The Senior Research Scientist will be assigned to the ARDEC, the Army's principle technology and engineering organization for gun-launched munitions and packaging. ARDEC's mission areas/program responsibilities also include development of insensitive energetic and warhead technology (e.g., explosive products of detonation, equations of state, dynamic liner material properties, and the relationship of penetrator performance, munitions system constraints/imposed environments and their relationship to warhead performance). The incumbent will be the leading authority for design and system parameter tradeoff analyses, evaluating the effect of design changes on munition sensitivity. Incumbent interfaces extensively with Department of Energy, Joint Services, Headquarters, Department of the Army, Joint Munitions and Lethality Life Cycle Management Command, Office of the Secretary of Defense, NATO and Industry.

Qualifications
Position requires substantial experience and significant scientific contributions related to the scientific disciplines and topic areas described in this position description. Incumbent demonstrates ability to think about issues creatively and with a practical view for applicability to inform policy, programs, and operational needs. Scientific achievements have demonstrated innovation and potential for maturation through applied and advanced technology research. Incumbent has peer-reviewed publications, invited presentations, and held positions with status in DoD/national/international scientific/professional organizations and societies.

Incumbent demonstrates expertise as an independent principal investigator/researcher, leading complex programs of research, scientific leadership/mentoring of other scientist, and close collaboration with scientists of various disciplines within DoD, academia, and industry.

Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience in, or closely related to, the field in which the candidate will work. Experience must have been sufficiently specialized to ensure adequate familiarity with the area of specialization, be both nationally and internationally recognized as an authority within the scientific and engineering community, or have direct application in the area for which the applicant is being considered.

Technical Qualification - Mandatory
MTQ: Proven pertinent experience in leading innovative research and providing expert technical consultation for insensitive munitions (IM) technology development and application including advanced/complex investigations using unique energetic material and IM technology experiments to define the details of IM response, design and system parameter tradeoff analyses and evaluation of the effect of design changes on munition sensitivity.
Education
Possession of a Graduate Degree (preferably Ph.D. or equivalent experience) in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or equivalent experience for related fields.
