AmeriCorps Member Position Description

Purpose: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character

Service Position Summary:
This position is a part-time 10-month, commitment which provides members with a living allowance and upon successful completion an education award. AmeriCorps members will be responsible for bringing Girl Scout programming to underserved girls who may be struggling academically and socially throughout the southern Arkansas region. This region would include Columbia, Ashley, Miller and Union counties. AmeriCorps members will deliver programming based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) in weekly, hour long sessions at multiple sites throughout the local community. This programming will help girls develop a strong sense of self and improve academic outcomes. Members will also help identify additional populations of underserved girls, identify partners and connect with them for collaborations, and recruit new volunteers from local communities to help. Members ensure Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scout message of pluralism and diversity to community groups, organizations and other constituencies within the council’s jurisdiction. Position will require 22-24 hours per week of service.

Seeking members in the Magnolia, Texarkana, Crossett, Hamburg and El Dorado areas

Essential Functions of Position:
Implements and directly facilitates programming for girls at assigned sites throughout the local community. Program material generally includes the following topics: healthy relationships, health and wellness, and/or the arts.
Ensures required paperwork is completed by girls, families, and/or site staff. To include: registration forms, outcomes surveys, and attendance.
Communicates effectively and clearly with girls and parents/guardians and provides information about Girl Scouting in the community.
Participates in site specific training, maintains positive relationships with site staff and other scheduled events/meetings.
Submits as needed outcome reports both on demand and monthly in support of AmeriCorps funding.
Attends scheduled council meetings or in-service trainings.
Engages in AmeriCorps trainings, Girl Scouts training and recognition ceremonies.
Recruit volunteers to assist with programming in local community.
Remain informed about and comply with Girl Scouts Volunteer Essentials, Safety Activity Checkpoints and state laws.
Additional service projects, as approved by the AmeriCorps Program Director.
The Arkansas Service Commission has determined that the probability of access to vulnerable populations is so great that all members will undergo all required criminal history checks: NSOPW, FBI, and Arkansas State Police, as well as other states, as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
Must be 18 years of age or older; must show proof of age
Enjoys working with girl’s grades K-12 and ability to act as a positive role model
Ability to serve 22-25 hours per week; weekends and evenings may be required
Must have reliable transportation
Must be able to lift 25 pounds
Organized, flexible, energetic and detail-oriented
Strong human relations skills and can work well with people of diverse backgrounds
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent computer skills

Academic and Experience Qualifications:
High School Diploma or working on GED
1-2 years’ experience working in a youth development setting
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, serve independently and meet deadlines.
