As a Senior Design Engineer-Mechanical, you will be asked to apply sound engineering practices while designing new products and technologies used in surgery. Encompassing everything from brainstorming new concepts to commercialization and manufacturing scale-up, design engineers anchor our New Product Development (NPD) team.

What you need:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
Minimum of 2 years of experience
Must be able to read and interpret complex engineering drawings
Have the ability to understand geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing
Demonstrated mechanical problem-solving skills
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Must be able to manage time, projects, stress and conflict
Must possess strong interpersonal skills including written and oral communication
Must be able to bring tasks through to completion with minimal supervision
Preferred Technical Competencies and Experience:
Demonstrated experience with ProE (CREO) or CAD
Familiar with Finite Element Analysis and numerical techniques is preferred
Medical device design experience
Experience with electronics preferred.
Under minimal supervision designs, develops, modifies and evaluates mechanical components for medical devices.
Provides information and participates in the estimation of project complexity, feasibility and cost at the concept stage of product development.
Develops new design concepts to solve engineering problems or address unmet user needs.
Uses rapid prototyping methods to quickly generate design concepts.
Tests concepts and supports internal and external feedback regarding concepts including user evaluation of preliminary prototypes.
Supports development of business plan as required including preliminary cost assessment and intellectual property searches.
Defining User Needs
Works with marketing to translate user requirements into design features for new products.
Defining Functional Specifications
Develops engineering specifications from user and product requirements.
Works with intellectual property team to develop new patents based on novel design concepts.
Is aware of and support analysis of existing intellectual property.
Gathers and analyzes data to benchmark and compare the performance of multiple products using specifications or empirical test data.
Assesses which products to benchmark against a potential design.
Develops and analyzes multiple solutions to user problems potentially prototyping one or more options to provide proof of concept.
Generates detailed design documentation and effectively communicates design to engineering teams.
Assesses which concepts require investigation at the beginning of a project.
Participates in technical designs as required.
Identifies and assesses appropriate suppliers for components.
Accesses capability of suppliers to manufacturer specialized components to specification.
Provides information and uses historical data to assess the risk of different scenarios and manages risk through design features where applicable.
Design prototype and debug solutions of moderate complexity.
Participate in the integration of modules to form a product.
Work with electrical and software engineers to ensure that all modules will integrate properly.
Participates in and hosts design reviews to improve the quality of a design.
OEM Component Selection
Specifies OEM components and works with OEM to customize a product for our needs.
Designing for Manufacturability
Performs Design for Manufacturability analysis.
Drives the planning manufacturing of a product with the manufacturing team.
Assists in process validation including the preparation of work instructions, procurement of materials, and resolution of issues as they arise in a build.
Reviews designs with marketing to ensure that they meet user requirements.
Test Plans and Design Verification/Validation
Uses historical data to develop effective test plans.
Looks for holes in a test plan and works to fill them by modifying the plan or performing testing not necessarily specified in the plan.
Debugs problems as they arise during verification and validation.
Documents all designs with the appropriate drawings utilizing internal procedures such as the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process. Work with document control to ensure that proper revisions are released to manufacturing and that proper revision control is maintained for mechanical design data (solid models, firmware source code, PCB source files, etc.).
Complaints and User Issue Resolution
Works with quality and tech support to troubleshoot problems, trend complaints, and analyze data to improve overall product quality and ensure that customer satisfaction is achieved through issue resolution.
Works with operations teams to maintain existing products; resolving issues with vendors, working through material obsolescence, and managing new product revisions.
Project Tracking and Status Reporting
Tracks project progress and presents periodic status updates to supervisor, project teams and/or senior staff.
Attends tradeshows related to current product lines to gather information/knowledge concerning technology and industry trends to resolve future design problems.
Visits customer sites to discuss products/projects, and observe products in use.
Mentor more junior engineers to help them improve.
