The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a support person who gives basic breastfeeding education, support and encouragement to WIC eligible pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers. This position will support mothers in an outpatient clinic setting.
**Please note, professional lactation consultants are NOT eligible for this position. This is a peer support position.
Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
The Lactation Peer Counselor will be available by phone outside the usual 8-5 working hours.
The PC will counsel and educate via cellular phone and in-person at the Nemours Practice sites.
Provide services to at least 12 pregnant or breastfeeding mothers per week at their primary care practices.
Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
Respects each participant by keeping information strictly confidential.
Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants.
Participate in related outreach activities assigned by the WIC program such as health fairs and open house celebrations.
Has breastfed at least one baby for at least 4 months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding)
Has been a previous or current WIC participant
Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and willing to share their experiences and knowledge with pregnant women and new mothers.
Can work at least 20 hours per week and available on weekends
Has a cellular phone and is willing to make and receive phone calls from home.
Attends a 16hr competency based course called Love and Support overseen by the Division of Public Health.
Observes other peer counselors or lactation consultants helping mothers breastfeed.
Read assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
Attends required Breastfeeding Peer Counselor trainings and conferences
Current AHA Healthcare Provider Certification must be obtained prior to start date.
