The incumbent serves as the working leader of the Grounds and Service Section of Facilities Maintenance Division. Responsible for planning/land management and executing a program of esthetics improvement and preservation of the 578-acre NIST Gaithersburg site consisting of extensive turf areas, natural woodlands, trees, shrubs, ground cover plants and fishponds. The incumbent is responsible for the design and development of landscaping plans and the establishment of professional standards. He/she consults with staff engineers (where new construction is involved) and reviews base plans or makes site survey to ascertain existing facilities and necessary changes. The unit is also responsible for trenching, excavation, grading, rough concrete work, pesticide/insecticide application in conformance with all applicable Maryland Department of Agriculture laws , and snow removal. Additional duties include establishing priorities, assigning work, balancing workload, establishing internal procedures, developing work statements and specifications for contracts, and other administrative duties.
Additionally, he/she is responsible for using, maintaining, and repairing appropriate tools and equipment required to perform duties of the position.
Position requires call back or emergency overtime.

There are no specific length or level of experience requirements. The applicant's overall background of experience, education, and training must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform gardener leader duties without more than normal supervision. Applicants must also meet the following screen-out element: Ability to manage and lead a grounds maintenance program. (includes developing and implementing a grounds maintenance program, landscape planning, establishing priorities, assigning work, balancing workloads, evaluating employees' performance, training, and establishing internal procedures) screen out element
