Job Description
Under direct supervision collects, sorts, delivers, distributes and dispatches incoming, outgoing and departmental mail, timely and accurately.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Receives all incoming mail, interdepartmental mail, notices and memoranda. Sorts according to appropriate destination and distributes to all hospital departments accurately and timely in accordance with departmental procedures.

Delivers mail and provides essential mail information to various UMMC departments.

Checks and traces improperly addressed mail. Corrects or returns mail to originator.

Sorts and weighs all outgoing mail. Affixes appropriate postage by using a postage meter and transports to United States Post Office, as necessary, in accordance with departmental procedures.

Processes registered and/or certified mail packages, insured items and prepares non-profit mailings in accordance with specific procedures.

Delivers and retrieves postage meter from the United States Post Office for postage refilling.

Observes UMMS and departmental policies and procedures, particularly safety and safe work practices.
Qualifications
Completion of a tenth-grade high school level of course is required.
Three to six months general work experience is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to retrieve or deliver materials to various locations within the Medical System.

Ability to operate basic support equipment for folding, cutting paper, and sorting mail.

Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time while picking up and delivering mail.

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. of cartons/boxes (paper or mail), up to 20% of the time.

Effective oral and written communication skills are necessary in being able to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and work with various hospital personnel.
Patient Safety
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
