Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of technical and supportive patient care tasks toassist attending anesthesiologists, residents and nurse anesthetists inperforming anesthetic procedures for patients ranging from infancy togeriatrics. Performs routine and delegated duties according todepartmental policies.
Work Performed

Consult Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipmentneeds for procedures; prepare anesthetizing locations for indicatedprocedure to include setting up and calibrating monitoring devices;troubleshoot anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functionalequipment to the proper department for repair.Assist anesthesiaproviders using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive andinvasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or centralintravenous and/or arterial line placement; airway managementtechniques including mask, endotracheal and/or emergency methods andregional anesthesia techniques.Assist anesthesia providers withphysiological monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesiaprovider(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physicalappearance of the patient.Clean anesthesia machines, monitorsand equipment following procedures established by InfectionControl.Stock anesthesia supplies in all anesthetizinglocations including ploss carts, fiberoptic carts, emergency airwaybags and any other anesthesia supply location.Obtain suppliesand equipment as requested by anesthesia providers.Assist withpatient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to,ABG's, ACTs and other point of care tests.Obtain blood productsand pharmaceuticals assisting with preparation anddelivery.Maintain immediate availability to assist in routineand emergency procedures.May act as a resource and role modelfor other anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, learners andother health care team members by providing technical guidance andinstruction as appropriate.May provide verbal and writtenfeedback of interviewees and peers as appropriate and as indicated bysupervisor.May serve as an instructor/facilitator ofeducational in-services for other anesthesia technicians.Mayact as a role model for orientation and training of anesthesiatechnicians and other health care team members.May assumeanesthesia technician charge role in managing daily work schedule ofanesthesia technicians and directing care to provide an efficient andsafe environment.Acquire and/or maintain certification byobtaining annual continuing education requirements.

Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure in astressful environment, and often without relief.Ability todemonstrate knowledge relating to the anesthesia procedures in order toeffectively anticipate the needs of the anesthesiologist.Ability to set priorities and respond appropriately to actualand/or potential life threatening situations.Communicate withpatients while helping prepare them for anesthesia to explainprocedures, allay fears and elicit patient cooperation. Participate innon-charged calming conversations.Establish and maintain goodworking relationships with other members of the health careteam.Physical abilities to complete job duties which includelifting, standing, walking, ability to push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel,reach overhead and rotate trunk for prolonged periods.

Education

Work generally requires two years of college coursework in biology,physiology, anatomy or related scientific fields.
Experience

Work requires one year of direct patient contact experience as anEmergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse or relatedclinical experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant educationand/or experience.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Basic Life Support Provider Certification.American Society ofAnesthesia Technologists and Technicians Certification preferred.
