Flight Test Engineer managing the planning and execution of flight test programs on highly modified business jet aircraft. The aircraft are equipped with RF/IR/EO sensors and systems to support flight test efforts that seek to understand air defense issues, in particular air vehicle survivability and vulnerability of U.S. Air Force aircraft to adversary weapons systems and countermeasures. Testing also encompasses demonstrations of advanced technology developed for future use in major weapon systems. Testing occurs both in the local area around Hanscom AFB and at DoD test ranges across the CONUS and occasionally OCONUS. Participates in parallel effort to recapitalize current aircraft with two Gulfstream IV aircraft undergoing major modifications to support similar test efforts for the next 20+ years.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage planning and execution of flight tests, from helping to scope the test and set objectives through test, logistics and deployment planning and execution. Test campaigns occur in local MOAs, on DoD test ranges across the CONUS and occasionally OCONUS. Coordinates and manages aircraft modifications adding new mission systems and sensors required to support research and mission objectives. Manages aircraft mission systems configuration control program. Coordinates with operations and maintenance to schedule and deconflict aircraft maintenance and modifications, local test and proficiency flying, and off-station flight test campaigns. The position also includes coordination with related government organizations, program planning, meeting preparation, presentation production, and active participation in critical program junctures such as Design Reviews, Safety Reviews, Test Readiness Reviews, and Data Release Reviews
Required Experience and Skills:
Minimum 5 years flight test planning and execution experience on DoD test ranges
Experience with radar frequency (RF) and electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors and instrumentation.
Experience with aircraft modification and configuration control processes
Desired Experience and Skills:
Recent experience planning and executing flight tests at the Nevada Test and Training Range as well as other key facilities managed by the Air Force Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, CA.
Strong data reduction and analysis expertise
Test Pilot School graduate
Education: Bachelor's Degree in an engineering related field
Clearance: Top Secret clearance is highly desired and Top Secret eligibility is required. Must have Secret clearance.
