- Traffic Studies Specialist -

The traffic studies specialist reviews and analyzes traffic data to identify concerns and recommends corrective action; may
assist in the administration of signing, pavement marking, and signal and lighting operations. Responsibilities are
performed under moderate supervision.

- Intermediate Traffic Studies Specialist -

The intermediate traffic studies specialist reviews and analyzes traffic related concerns and recommends transportation
facility improvements; may assist in the administration of signing, pavement marking, and signal and lighting operations.
Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

- Senior Traffic Studies Specialist -

The senior traffic studies specialist leads the collection of traffic related data; analyzes data for causes and recommends
remedial action; and leads the signing and striping and/or signal and lighting special crews. Responsibilities are performed
under general supervision.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:
- Traffic Studies Specialist -


Bachelor's Degree: Civil Engineering

- Intermediate Traffic Studies Specialist -

Bachelor's Degree: Civil Engineering

Two years of experience in transportation engineering.

- Senior Traffic Studies Specialist -

Bachelor's Degree: Civil Engineering

Four years of experience in highway or transportation engineering.

- Traffic Studies Specialist -

• Reviews and analyzes traffic data to identify concerns and recommends corrective actions.
• Investigates and responds to customer concerns on traffic related issues.
• Reviews policies, standards, and other criteria pertaining to signing, pavement marking, signals, lighting, crash

records, and permits to make improvements or ensure compliance.

• Makes periodic field inspections to observe traffic operations; conducts traffic studies and makes recommendations to
ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

• Assists in directing the activities of traffic data collection, signing, pavement marking, and signal and lighting
operations.

• Assists in the preparation of transportation related reports and correspondence; may support project development
activities as member of the core team.

• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
- Intermediate Traffic Studies Specialist -

• Assists in the management and operations of transportation facilities by applying department and national standards,
guidelines, and best practices.

• Makes periodic field inspections to observe traffic operations; conducts traffic studies and makes recommendations to
ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

• Investigates and responds to customer concerns on traffic related issues; including internal customers, the general
public, public officials, and law enforcement.

• Prepares transportation related reports and correspondence.
• Directs the activities of traffic data collection, signing, pavement marking, and signal and lighting operations.
• May coordinate traffic engineering staff in reviewing and analyzing traffic data to identify concerns and recommend

transportation improvements.

• May direct and train traffic studies engineers, traffic specialists, traffic technicians, and wage employees on various
transportation activities.

• May review plans for proper design and application of traffic control devices and support project development by
serving on the core team.

• May assist in the review of complex transportation issues; may meet with developers, contractors, utility companies,
or consultants to discuss proposed projects; may meet with local governmental agencies and the media to discuss
transportation related issues.

• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

- Senior Traffic Studies Specialist -

• Prepares transportation related reports, correspondence, records, and presentations for internal and external
customers.

• Meets with developers, contractors, utility companies, or consultants to discuss proposed projects; meets with local
governmental agencies and the media to discuss transportation related issues.

• Directs the activities of traffic data collection, signing, pavement marking, and signal and lighting operations.
• Conducts traffic studies; coordinates traffic engineering staff in the review, query, and analysis of traffic data to identify

concerns and recommend transportation improvements to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

• Designs and/or develops layout of traffic control devices; reviews plans for proper design and application of traffic
control devices; and supports project development by serving on multiagency, quick action, and core teams.

• Responds to and investigates public, political, and media inquiries, complaints, requests and criticisms of department
facilities.

• Coordinates with maintenance in signing, signal and lighting operations; makes recommendations regarding traffic
control equipment and materials.

• Performs lead worker responsibilities, which may include providing general instruction, assigning and reviewing work,
coaching and training, providing guidance and instruction in the proper and most efficient methods of accomplishing
tasks, and providing input to the direct supervisor on staffing decisions and performance management.

• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
