This position is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 500 - Provost & Enrollment Division. That means the terms and conditions of your employment are governed by university policy (including the Staff Personnel Policies Manual) and any collective bargaining agreement entered into between American University and SEIU Local 500 - Provost & Enrollment Division.
Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Research Services & Communications in the Office of Research, the CS will develop and implement internal and external communications strategies for the Office of Research strategic initiatives. The Communications Specialist will collaborate with the Special Assistant of Strategic Initiatives in the Office of Research. The CS will design, support, and manage research communications, including websites, original graphic design, newsletters, email communications, and social media. In addition, the CS will conduct research, analyze information, and define stakeholder audiences. The incumbent will need to exhibit flexibility, adaptability, and creativity and must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Strategic initiatives may reflect the disciplinary orientation of any of the fields offered at the university, but the incumbent must be comfortable working with researchers on research translation.
Essential Functions:
Digital Content Development & Strategy: Conceives, researches, and writes articles, profiles, and other content for the web with additional collateral in cooperation with relevant researchers to deliver compelling narratives that align with the overall strategic goals and priorities of the Office of Research strategic initiatives, including those of the Translating Research into Action Center (TRAC). Designs and creates original graphic design. Evaluates and measures performance of overall content strategy.
Email Newsletter Content & Strategy: Develops and executes a sophisticated email newsletter strategy. Produces and edits public newsletters, including writing original content, texts, headlines, abstracts, captions, links, keywords, video, etc. Utilizes analytics tools to measure the performance of email newsletters to make data-driven decisions to enhance effectiveness and reach.
Social Media Content & Strategy: Plan, produce, schedule, and publish high-quality, engaging social media content to connect and increase engagement. Use relevant applications to create graphic designs, audio, or video to enhance communications. Use the appropriate tools to measure the success of each campaign and make appropriate adjustments based on those results. 20%
