Benefits Manager

Primary Responsibility:

The Benefits Manager is responsible for the administration, implementation and communication of employee benefit programs. Key responsibilities include administering health, welfare and retirement plans, managing outsourced programs, developing policies and procedures, and managing vendor relationships. Additionally, this person will ensure our programs meet employees’ needs, comply with legal requirements, and are cost effective.

Essential Functions:

1. Administers and manages the health, welfare and retirement plans including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, leave, defined contribution and defined benefit plans for both union and non-union populations

2. Oversees the handling of benefit inquiries and complaints to ensure quick, equitable, courteous resolutions; Maintains contact and builds relationships with carriers to facilitate proper and complete utilization of benefits for all employees

3. Oversees union pension and health & welfare payments, along with managing the Multi-Employer Plan withdrawal Liabilities process

4. Manages outside vendor relationships

5. Works closely with HRIS Department and outside vendors during the Annual Open Enrollment process and during any merger and acquisition activities

6. Responsible for timely filings of the Health & Welfare 5500, along with the Defined Contribution and Defined Benefit 5500’s

7. Ensures company compliance with state and federal regulations including HIPAA, FMLA, COBRA, ERISA, Paid Leave and other applicable regulations

8. Instructs carriers, trustees, and other administrative agencies outside the company to effect changes in benefit programs; ensures prompt and accurate compliance

9. Oversees the Americold leave process and is a resource for leave related issues

10. Analyzes the flow of employee benefits data and develops internal procedures, guidance, and training for the team that improves efficiency

11. Manages a team of Administrators and Specialists

12. Other duties as requested

Qualifications & Experience:

Education, Training & Professional Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, Finance or other related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 8 years benefits planning and administration
  • Minimum 2 years PeopleSoft experience
  • Hands on experience working with leaves to include FML, STD, LTD, ADA
  • Experience in a union environment highly preferred
  • Experience working with Defined Benefit Pension Plans along with Multi-Employer Pension Plans
  • Ability to solve complex problems as they relate to business processes and benefit issues
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in a multi-state environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to benefits.
