Duties &
Responsibilities:
Render contaminated articles safe for handling and reprocessing. To prevent contamination of wounds through well defined pre-use and pre-operative treatment of instruments and other articles so as to render them sterile.
- Remains current in decontamination sterilization, packaging, and distribution of instrumentation and supplies
- Operate the following equipment:
- Ultrasonic washer/dryer
- Water distiller
- Washer/decontamination unit
- Steam sterilizers: Hi-vac and gravity
- Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer
- Instrument marker
- Steris
- Monitor efficiency of sterilizer and log
- Perform biological testing
- Knowledge of and performance in cold sterilization
- Identification of surgical instrumentation by proper name and appropriate sterilization method
- Preparation of surgical goods and instrumentation for sterilization
- Maintains appropriate rotation of sterile supplies
- Appropriately identify each sterilizer load and maintain record of each
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the department
- Practice safe handling of patient care items that have been exposed to blood and/or body fluid
- Report broken or malfunctioning equipment to Lead Central Sterile Technician
- Assist with transporting surgery patients
- Observe safe working habits
- Participate in in-service education and department meetings
- Abide by hospital policies and procedures
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Perform other duties as assigned
Lifting Requirements: Very Heavy- is considered generally lifting objects in excess of 100 lbs. with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50 lbs or more.
