Performs skilled water safety work involved in the operations of the Parks and Recreation Aquatic facilities. Responsible for safeguarding employees and patrons at indoor and outdoor pools; does related work as required. Work involves the prevention of injury or loss of life at aquatics facilities for swimming by performing water rescue and prevention techniques, first aid, and CPR. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Services Coordinator. The position is non-classified, and work is performed only on a part-time or temporary, seasonal basis.

Knowledge and performance of approved water rescue and accident prevention techniques, emergency procedures, simulation drills, water safety policies, first aid, and CPR.
Knowledge and performance of water safety practices and procedures.
Basic knowledge of operational safety and maintenance requirements for aquatics facilities and amenities.
Ability to react efficiently and effectively in emergency rescue situations.
Ability to react efficiently and tactfully with the public and to be capable of enforcing regulations firmly and impartially.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the City of Winchester Ethics policy.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials, and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Skills in pool and open water swimming, water rescue, accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, standard first aid and CPR.
Completes other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Provides support at other department programs and events as needed.
Typical Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Applicants must have Lifeguard/First Aid, CPR Professional Rescuer and AED certification through the American Red Cross.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend. Has the ability to speak and communicate effectively using correct English.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of office equipment, telephone, and customer service.

Environmental Conditions: Work is conducted in and around an indoor and outdoor pool environment.

Vision Requirements: Minimum requirements set by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Required Physical Activities: Requires moderate physical effort working almost exclusively with light weight materials (up to 25 pounds) including but not limited to walking, talking, stooping, kneeling, light lifting, bending, reaching and gripping. Requires occasional sustained, intense exertion swimming, including the ability to swim while carrying a body.
