Duties: The HIT Specialist plays a vital technical role in the medical records area at the health center level. The HIT Specialist will work under the guidance of both the Manager of Health Information and the Director of Health Information. The overall work requires knowledge of medical records administration and general management. The primary functions of this position include (but are not limited to) the following tasks: maintaining and recording medical data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) using NextGen technology, completing and reviewing correspondence communication to various agencies, working with immigrants to complete their application for citizenship, scanning, electronically filing correspondence, tracking PCMH and Joint Commission data for reporting, working with patients requests when needed and chart audits to support accurate medical coding functions, and continuous support to patient enrollment for the Patient Portal. The HIT Specialist must have the ability to apply laws and regulations on the confidentiality of information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Privacy Act of 1974 and Freedom of Information Act.

High School Graduate or equivalent;
Associate's degree preferred;
NextGen Competency Achievement Certificate;
Successful completion of Advanced Health Information training when made available.
Minimum Qualifications: 3-5 years experience in a medical records/HIT environment. Some experience performing ICD/CPT coding. Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines and Release of Information laws and processes. Experience with abstraction and data entry of medical records. Working knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to work with technical professionals, management and medical professionals in a team environment and the ability to work effectively independently. Must be able to maintain confidentiality regarding the patient information in accordance with all HIPAA and NEON policies.
