Summer Camp season is quickly approaching and the McBurney YMCA is seeking a Day Camp Activity Specialist who, under the supervision of the Camp Director, will play a critical role in providing academic enhancement and enrichment in the Summer Day Camp program. The incumbent will be responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school aged children, to provide opportunities for learning, interaction and academic / personal growth. Specifically, the Day Camp Activity Specialist will prepare and provide age-appropriate Robotics instructions for campers ages 6-8 during Summer Day Camp.

A day in the life of a Day Camp Activity Specialist

The Day Camp Activity Specialist is responsible for planning and executing robotics activities and providing overall supervision to campers. Specifically, the Day Camp Activity Specialist will plan and implement meaningful activities and special events that are structured, age-appropriate, fun, exciting, challenging, and values based in the area of Robotics. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Understand, maintain, and ensure that participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures.
  • Teach participants the fundamentals of Robotics, including activities that build their level of skill and confidence.
  • Coordinate and present a culminating performance at the end of the program cycle, if applicable.
  • Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (attendance, sign in / out forms, behavior / incident / accident reports, as appropriate).
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication about their child’s strengths and areas of growth.
  • Adhere to all Department of Health, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations and regulations.
  • Prepare the learning environment, lessons, and necessary supplies for Robotics activities.


  • High School diploma or equivalent required. College credits and formal education in Robotics preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with youth, specifically in Robotics.
  • Advance knowledge working with Lego Mindstorms EV3 and Lego WeDo 2.0 required.
  • General knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Access, Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop preferred.


The summer day camp season begins July 1st and ends on August 23rd. You must also attend, and successfully complete, 40 hours of pre-camp training.
