Ontera Inc. is a precision diagnostics company aiming to democratize access to molecular information by making it simple, fast and cost-effective at point of need. Leveraging silicon nanopores to sense single molecules in combination with machine learning, Ontera has developed a highly differentiated suite of platforms. In point of care diagnostics, we are developing the only multimodal, highly specific and sensitive MDx platform that can multiplex 20 target proteins, small analytes and NA in less than 20 minutes. In research, we are using our dual pore technology for genome mapping and structural variants while building the only epigenetics tool capable of directly looking at DNA modification, nucleosome phasing, and histone modification. Founded in 2011, the company is based in Santa Cruz, California.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
We are seeking a highly-motivated Research Associate to join the Nanopore Research and Development group at Ontera. The Research Associate position is responsible for the execution of a wide variety of testing on Ontera’s solid-state nanopores. The incumbent will perform established assays, as well as contribute to the development of new experimental tests.
Data collection and analysis on Ontera’s solid-state nanopore devices using custom software
Perform testing on new biochemical assays, software, hardware, and consumable releases and provide feedback to respective groups
Perform common biochemistry assays and other laboratory testing as required (PCR, gel electrophoresis, pH measurement, etc.)
Troubleshoot equipment within scope of experience
Maintain timely and accurate documentation of all laboratory activities in a lab notebook or electronic notebook
Use spreadsheet and word processing software to analyze data and produce accurate, concise data summaries.
Assist in preparing experimental protocols, project summaries, and technical reports.
Prepare written and oral reports for presentation to the supervisor(s) and at departmental meetings
Maintain reagent stocks and equipment inventories
Exercise technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to partner projects
Perform additional job-related duties as required
Occasionally, projects require flexibility in work schedule to meet business needs
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering or related field
Computer literate and proficient in MS Office, Google Productivity Suite or other relevant electronic systems
Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve within scope of training
Effective, concise written and verbal communication skills
Well-organized and self-motivated
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative team
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines
Basic experience working in a wet-lab research laboratory setting.
Experience with common molecular biology techniques such as PCR and DNA purification
Basic experience with MatLab, LabView, R, Python or other scripting languages
Reports to VP of Engineering or designee

Job may involve working with or near toxic or infectious materials. Employee will be required to follow Ontera SOPs and safety procedures, and always wear proper personal protective equipment.
