This position supports CMU’s strategic goals by 1) leading operations and growth as the primary academic retailer in support of the academic programs and events for the University community, and 2) creating an enduring sense of community among past, present and future Mavericks and CMU fans through innovative merchandise and retail solutions. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Auxiliary Services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Oversees all daily operations of The Maverick Store with a current sales volume of $4 million and 5,100 square feet of floor space at two on-campus retail locations, various athletic venues and online at TheMaverickStore.com, serving over 10,000 students.
Fosters an entrepreneurial spirit and approach among store staff to continually improve customer satisfaction and grow revenues, which are reinvested into the University.
Provides exceptional customer service by offering a customer-centric experience and leading team members in the delivery/execution.
Builds strong relationships and partnerships with campus departments as well as establishes rapport with potential and actual customers, including students, parents, faculty, staff and community members in order to identify current and future needs and interests for course materials and merchandising decisions.
Keeps abreast of market trends, including virtual and hybrid bookstore and retail solutions, and makes recommendations to senior management to ensure the long-term viability and profitability of The Maverick Store.
Supports CMU’s educational mission and fulfills the needs of the academic community by working with faculty, information technology and students to develop innovative solutions for course materials that address market competition, reduce student cost, improve student experience and meet academic requirements.
In cooperation with campus marketing, athletics, licensing partners and other appropriate colleagues, continually evaluate and update merchandising strategies to improve sales and meet customer needs. Lead implementation of agreed-upon solution.
Determines general merchandise offerings — including, but not limited to, supplies, books, gifts, official university apparel, food products, and — and monitors purchasing and inventories to maximize sales margins and profits.
Initiate changes to operations to improve efficiency and customer service.
Make forecasts, and analyze sales, revenue reports and other financial operations to positively impact future sales/expense opportunities and to remain in compliance with University fiscal and procurement rules.
Prepares and implements detailed operating budget and operating plans for all store departments for standard operations, busy rush periods, and special events (athletics, graduation).
Coordinates all aspects of textbook sales and buybacks, including reviewing enrollment numbers, past history, inventory levels and current adoptions in order to ensure appropriate quantities for purchase and to buy back.
Responsible for full cycle talent management, to include recruiting, training, coaching, schedule development, talent development and employee evaluation for full-time, part-time, temporary and student team members; serves as a mentor to student employees.
Protects employees, customers, and store by providing a safe and clean environment and maintains the stability and reputation of the school and the store by complying with legal requirements.
Performs other duties as assigned.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Auxiliary Services. The following positions report to the Maverick Store Manager: Assistant Bookstore Manager, Bookstore Department Manager, Bookstore Manager, E-Commerce Coordinator, Student Employees and seasonal help.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited college or university is required.
A minimum of three years’ management experience in the retail field. Knowledge of retail management software
Highly motivated, energetic, and entrepreneurial, with a passion for exceptional customer service
Perceptive of trends in a retail environment and innovative approaches in sales.
Able to effectively lead people and work in a collaborative environment.
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and tech savvy
Able to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously with frequently changing priorities.
Excellent oral communications skills and public speaking experience required. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, faculty, students, parents, and the public. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, areas, circumference, and volume as related to fiscal management.
Strategic and analytical reasoning skills are necessary. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

The Maverick Store Manager may be required to lift boxes of up to 25 pounds and to push, pull and/or positions heavy merchandise up to 50 pounds.
