SUMMARY:

Lead the machine shop production employees in their daily job requirements to insure company policies and standards are met. Requires a working knowledge of fixture design and programming languages/software. Good communications skills and ability to work as part of a team is a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to regular production responsibilities the person in this position must perform the necessary duties to maintain the flow of work in the department, program and set up machines in accordance with job specifications and train operators and set up technicians. Also must actively participate in talent development, the employee review process for all machine shop personnel and conduct weekly meetings with machine shop employees regarding safety, service, efficiency, quality and communications.

Must be able to initiate and perform the following functions in order to successfully lead the machine shop;

  • Manage, supervise, and direct machine shop personnel in day to day activities relating to productivity, attendance, quality, and overall attitude
  • Assign daily production duties to production operators and insure productivity standards are met
  • Define and implement machining processes including set-up and run times, create routings and set up instructions
  • Instruct and train employees on both manual and CNC machines as necessary
  • Maintain productivity through visual management
  • Design fixtures to work with cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines such as vertical or horizontal mills, lathes, grinders, etc.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as feeds, speeds, depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media
  • Assist with CNC programming including optimization of existing programs
  • Assist with development of and implementation of productivity and cost reduction projects
  • Assures the proper and timely maintenance of all equipment
  • Support new product inititives
  • Maintains a safe work environment and performs accident investigations when necessary
  • Assist with Identification, selection, justification, and installation of future equipment as required.
  • Perform special projects as needed

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of CNC lathes and mills, tool grinders, grinding wheels, manual lathes and mills. Knowledge of measuring equipment, wrenches, full complement of tools and their use.

Knowledge of computer systems, communication tools and software such as Windows helpful.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Must be able to work independently and be self-starter
  • Strong management and team-building skills
  • Knowledge of windows based system and Microsoft office software

Non-Mandatory Requirements:

  • Familiar with MRP/ERP particularly SAP
  • Experience in a leadership role (team lead or project lead for example).
  • Kaizen experience

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of machine shop experience as an operator, programmer, step up tech or manager
  • Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required sit, reach with hands and arms. Must be able to occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds. The job requires distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Extensive walking to different work stations, intermittent periods of sitting at computer; twisting, turning, reaching, and bending.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work both in an office environment and on the manufacturing floor

The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Salary: $45,000.00 to $55,000.00 /year
