The Position
Utility and Maintenance Technicians are responsible for performing a variety of broad technical duties related to wastewater collection and may be required to be on-call, 24/7 and respond to emergency situations

Placement at Level I or Level II level is dependent upon candidates qualifications and the Division's needs. This recruitment will also create a list that may be used to fill future vacancies within the Water and Street Maintenance Divisions.

Examples of Important & Essential Duties (included but not limited to)
Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, installation and/or cleaning activities, which may involve: alleys, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, asphalt, pot holes, NPDES drainage, drainage ditches, traffic signage and controls, pavement markings, NPDES storm drains, culverts, basins, wastewater collection systems, sewer lines, storm drain lines, catch basins, manhole covers, wastewater blockages and wastewater mains, fire hydrants, backflow devices and other related appurtenances.
Participates and assists co-workers with work methods, techniques, and procedures related to: right-of-way maintenance; heavy equipment operation; specialized wastewater equipment; specialized sewer cleaning equipment; tree removal/trimming; vegetation control; litter removal; water, service, water main and valve installation; water leak repairs; main valve replacement; meter reading; locating and marking services for contractors; securing hazardous materials; and/or other related activities.
Documents work activities and maintains related records and logs.
Responds to inquiries and requests for maintenance; recommends solutions to problems and issues; assists in starting new service and/or turning off service; may be required to be on-call for emergency response situations.
Troubleshoots problems related to right-of-way maintenance, leaks, fire hydrants, water quality, services, mains, meters, storm and sewer blockages, spill volume, and other related equipment.
Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and tools, which may include: dump trucks, backhoes,combination sewer and storm drain cleaners continuous rodder, CCTV inspection equipment, roller viberplates, chain saws, pole saws, cement saws, weed eaters, grinders, bobcats, trenchers, air compressors, jack hammers, saw cutters, forklifts, power freezing units and tanks, oxygen and acetylene tanks, and/or other related items.
Observes and follows established safety precautions regarding traffic control, confined space, trenching, excavating, and power equipment operation.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Performs routine maintenance, repair and/or cleaning of concrete, pot holes, street lines, traffic signs, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streets, storm drains, drainage ditches, culverts, basins, sewers, catch basins, manhole covers, water services, water mains and valves, and other related items.
Pulls and removes weeds and trims shrubs and trees.
Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete.
Sets up traffic controls and/or barricades and serves as a flagman.
Locates and marks utility lines/services.
Installs new water services, water mains and valves, fire hydrants, and other related appurtenances.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push, pull, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations, availability for shift work, on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.
Minimum Qualifications

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
Both Level I and II require a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Level I:
One year of construction, operation and/or maintenance related experience
Valid Class "C" California Driver's License and safe driving record

Level II:
Two years of experience at WWC Maintenance Technician level I or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Wastewater Grade I Certification
Valid Class "B" California Driver's License and a safe driving record

ADDITIONAL CERTS/LICENSES DESIRED:
Completion of traffic control and flagging class, certification for Confined Space entry, Class "A" driver's license is desirable (Class "A" California Commercial Driver's License is a requirement to take stand-by duty). California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Collection Systems Maintenance G-2 is highly desirable.
