About Our Job
Denver Parks & Recreation has an exciting opportunity for an Urban Forestry Operations Assistant to support the operations of the Office of the City Forester. This position will interface with citizens and other stakeholders and will also play an integral role in Denver’s tree planting initiatives, tree inventory, and code enforcement through field work.

The Urban Forestry Operations Assistant position provides an opportunity to learn more and develop skills through immersion in a nationally recognized urban forestry program. The City Forester’s Office is dedicated to staff development and offers many learning and certification opportunities. This position will report to the Denver Post Building in Downtown Denver, but will spend a substantial amount of time working in the field.

Job Duties:
Act as citizen and stakeholder interface for tree planting projects & initiatives; acts as liaison by providing technical support and customer service to relevant stakeholders
Maintains a working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies and procedures related to Office of City Forester operations and applies them appropriately
Conduct site visits and field inspections to ensure appropriate tree planting sites; evaluates and monitors new or existing procedures for effectiveness and prepares preliminary recommendations for improvements as appropriate
Collects, evaluates and maintains related data (e.g. tree inventory data); prepares reports and analyses to further initiatives and improvements
Assist Forestry staff as needed during major storm events in Denver such as fielding phone calls/emails, documentation and other related tasks as needed
Performs other related duties as assigned.
This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. Work schedule for this position is flexible to accommodate work-life balance and will be expected to work 30 hours per week for approximately 1 year.

About You
This position is a great opportunity for someone looking to learn more about urban forestry operations (both in-field work and office related tasks) while contributing to Denver’s community. We are looking for someone who is knowledgeable in arboriculture with knowledge of trees/tree planting and strong customer service skills. Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Landscape Design or related field.
Experience with tree planting, proper site identification and establishment.
Knowledge of tree risk assessment.
Experience with various computer programs and devices such as: tree inventory programs (e.g. Tree Keeper), Microsoft Office suite, mobile device/tablet use.
Experience with email and phone communication in a customer service setting.
ISA Certified Arborist.

Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of clerical experience at the type and level of an Administrative Support Assistant IV.
Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
