Leads and directs the commercial underwriting department department in the development, implementation and execution of the company’s underwriting strategy in a manner that supports the company’s strategic plan and profitable growth while preserving its reputation, brand and culture.
Oversees the development of a profitable and growing book of commercial business through leadership and direction of all operations within underwriting including commercial underwriting, risk control, premium audit, automation, process improvement, rating and processing.
Sets a positive cultural environment where integrity and ethics are unquestioned, customers are the prime focus, employee growth and engagement are present and organizational excellence is the ultimate objective. Supports the professional development of the team through coaching, mentoring and leadership development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Collaborates with executive team members as appropriate for creation and execution of organizational direction.
Implements policy management and technology systems focused on the company’s mission to gain efficiency through automation (i.e., straight through processing, predictive analytics, enhanced third party use of data).
Works as member of a team with directors, managers and supervisors within the department to ensure continuous improvement in operational results and process efficiencies.
Oversees the appropriate application of guidelines, rates and pricing of accounts based on exposure while monitoring and reviewing pricing results to correct any deficiencies. Resolves any trends or deviations from established underwriting standards.
Ensures that Society’s book of business is built and managed profitably and within the niches and strategies developed by the company.
Oversees the evaluation of underwriting renewals, new business, actuarial trends and market opportunities and product applications.
Ensures the underwriting organization develops and maintains successful relationships with agents by creating strong relationships with the independent agent force.
Engages and approves account decisions as appropriate and in keeping with letters of authority in place within the underwriting department.
Drives development of state business plans and aggressively monitors results adjusting strategies and tactics to maximize profit while balancing growth. Closely monitors goals and results for effective outcomes.
Ensures UW is represented in the product rationalization process and collaborates with Marketing, Claims and Underwriting Automation as appropriate.
Represents UW throughout the company as collaborative and open to new possibilities with initiative, innovation and problem solving.
Provides quality customer service by enforcing quality standards; analyzing customer service issues; recommending system and process improvements.
Develops effective, ongoing training of commercial underwriting employees through trend analysis and audit reviews.
Attends industry and association functions.
Develops staff by coaching, mentoring, technical training, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
Maintains staff by interviewing, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
Completes necessary administrative work by (including, but not limited to) approving time cards on a bi-weekly basis; approving PTO and flextime requests as appropriate; completing yearly salary administration; operating within departmental and company guidelines and standards.

Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, economics or related field.
Minimum 15 years of demonstrated competency in a commercial, multi-line Commercial Underwriting organization.
Minimum 10 years of successful leadership, execution and management.
Demonstrated history of initiative, collaboration and plan execution.
Recognized high-level designation(s) (example: CPCU, AIC, CIC, ARM, AU) and ongoing industry education.
Leadership experience, including the ability to effect change and motivate people.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Record of continued education in industry trends.
At least 15 years of successful executive leadership at a vice president level is strongly preferred.
Master of Business Administration.
Experience leading a Commercial Underwriting department.
Exposure/experience managing Premium Audit, Risk Control and Rating functions.
Experience in commercial lines underwriting in lines of business and territories similar to Society Insurance.
Experience managing teams responsible for strategic planning, business development, or client management.
High level of competency with information technology.
Experience working in a paperless environment.
Directly supervises Director(s) of Commercial Underwriting, Director of Risk Control, Senior Policy Technical/Process Services Manager and Senior Premium Audit & Rating Services Manager.
