We are currently seeking a Food Scientist with strong leadership qualities who will be crucial in driving innovation and maintaining quality standards within the organization. This position will be located in Houston, TX.
Description:
Provide leadership and strategic direction to REVEAM management, food safety and sanitation teams. Oversee food safety auditing (internal and external) at REVEAM’s multiple locations. Lead or direct efforts to develop and implement best in class food safety systems and processes. Develop, monitor, and analyze key food safety metrics to identify areas of opportunity. Provide expertise and guidance to other REVEAM groups and operations teams in resolving complex food safety questions and challenges. Represent REVEAM and its technology with strategic customers regarding food safety, APHIS compliance, and shelf-life extension. Participate in industry outreach activities to ensure that REVEAM and its processes are consistent with the latest science.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop strategic long-range plan for the food safety, sanitation, and auditing groups within REVEAM. Lead and direct continued implementation of best-in-class food safety, sanitation, shelf-life extension and USDA/ APHIS and FDA compliance.
- Organization of a strategy to protect the company in the event of crises.
- Develop methods to verify and validate food safety processes by using the latest science for measuring Critical Control Points (CCP’s); documenting prerequisite programs; determining operational and performance limits related to food safety; writing and updating food safety procedures.
- Lead third, second, and first party audits.
- Oversee investigating customer complaints.
- Collaborating with other members of management, government, and customers to improve food safety systems.
- Review food safety documentation and reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends including failed processes, internal audits, recalls, corrective actions, and re-validations.
- Lead or direct in-depth food safety and sanitation review of all infrastructure and equipment purchases to ensure that proper design standards are met.
- Facilitate effective deployment of food safety & sanitation related capital expenses.
- Serve as key REVEAM contact for food safety with strategic customers to ensure customer confidence.
- Lead and direct industry collaboration and outreach activities with key academic institutions, other industry partners and experts to ensure that REVEAM has access to the latest science and technology information and resources.
- Follows all safety and health guidelines relevant to the food industry.
- Direct the educating of management and employees on proper food safety.
- Follows directives and implements various health and safety guidelines that are mandated by the state as well as the company.
- Respond to regulatory, consumer and customer complaints.
- Lead all recall efforts as REVEAM’s recall coordinator.
- Monitors food safety trends and reconsider food safety program as needed.
- Lead all corporate food safety projects and activities.
- Must follow all instruction related to Food Defense and Good Manufacturing Practices Must stop and report to the Food Safety Department any problem or irregular situation they are made aware related to food safety. Enforce security and food safety standards, policies, and programs related to HACCP, and third-party standards, regulatory standards, food safety training programs, product inspections, and any work instructions.
- Required to follow all quality system requirements for position and facility operations.
- Required to comply with and ensure all general safety, OSHA, USDA/APHIS, FDA and State of Texas regulations for position and facility operations.
Qualifications (specific requirements needed to be qualified for the position)
- 12+ years of food safety and quality assurance experience in the fresh food industry.
- Previous corporate food safety management experience in a company larger than 500 million in revenue.
- 10+ years food safety under a GFSI recognized scheme.
- 10+ years food safety environmental monitoring experience.
- Experienced in technical writing.
- 10+ experience in the grant writing process.
- Fresh food processing or Produce industry-specific experience.
- Knowledge of tools, concepts, and methodologies of QA, GMP and HACCP.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements for food processing under Preventive Control for Human Food and the Produce Safety Rule.
- Must have the experience and ability to write Test Plans
- Can led teams including our customers through test phases, ensuring proper test outcomes.
- Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communications skills.
- Ability to identify and resolve problems independently and with sound judgment.
- Has served on at least one food science committee in the last three years.
- Ability to read, write and perform necessary functions to accurately record data.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally, work flexible hours, on standby as needed.
- Establishes and maintains effective channels of communications with all stakeholders internal and external contacts.
- Able to organize and add to intercompany technical reference repository/ data collection.
- Ability to partner with University research Professors and Scientists on projects.
- Experience with irradiation is preferred (or willingness to learn).
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Required Education:
- PhD in Food Science, Microbiology, Biomedical Engineering, Plant Pathology, or a related life science field; Advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- PCQI certificate from FSPCA.

The employee is regularly exposed to energized electrical gear, moving mechanical parts, tools and vehicles. Is occasionally exposed to low permissible levels of ionizing radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Constant work temperature averages 41F.
