Soil and Water Conservation District Administrative Assistant I

Job Purpose:

Performs various administrative duties specific to the Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District (LSWC) such as: reception, clerical duties, customer service, publicity and recordkeeping. Assist with marketing and outreach programs as necessary. Prepares agendas and supporting materials for meetings and programs. Records actions and provides accurate transcription of Board Meetings and other meetings as necessary. Provides professional customer service, has organizational skills, utilizes problem solving skills and communicates with supervisor, commissioners, co-workers, United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) and South Carolina-Department of Natural Resources (SC-DNR) partners and citizens.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as receptionist for the district and the USDA-NRCS office. Answers phones and directs call to appropriate personnel. Sorts and distributes incoming mail. Assist citizens with general questions directed to LSWCD and USDA-NRCS.
  • Prepares and proofreads a variety of correspondents, memorandums, reports, requisitions and other material. Assist with financial records and accountability. Assist with preparation of the annual budget and monitors expenditures.
  • Coordinates meetings and meeting space; prepares meeting agendas; types and copies all background material related to items on the agenda; attends meetings; takes and accurately transcribes minutes; distributes minutes for approval.
  • Assist in maintaining USDA-NRCS files and maintains LSWCD files.
  • Conducts or assist with outreach and/or conservation educational programs in schools, festivals or other venues.
  • Maintains and updates LSWCD website and Facebook page and possible creation of other social media. Uses MailChimp or similar program for distribution of LSWCD Newsletters and other information.
  • Maintains inventory and operates a variety of office equipment such as computers, copiers, printers, shredder, etc. for office efficiency.
  • Interacts and works with Lexington County departments, such as Finance, Human Resources, Public Works, etc.
  • Limited overnight travel may be required, and some afterhours meetings will be required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Various computer programs for LSWCD and USDA-NRCS;
Computer operating systems hardware;
Administrative procedures;
Clerical procedures;
Recordkeeping procedures;
Bookkeeping procedures;

Written and verbal communication via in-person, phone or email contact;
Customer service in dealing with the public with various issues pertaining to LSWCD and USDA-NRCS;
Minute taking to record meetings;
Generating, updating and editing various reports for the LSWCD and USDA-NRCS;
Budgeting practices used for department projects.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Positions in this class typically require fingering, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.


Associates Degree preferred. High School diploma or equivalent, with 1 to 2 years’ experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform

Salary: $12.65 /hour
