How You'll Make a Difference:
Serves as the key point of contact for coding and documentation information in the clinic setting, providing feedback, and problem resolution. Acts as a liaison between an employed Provider [Physician and/or Advanced Practice Provider (APP)] and the Physician Coding Department. Coordinates communication and process information between Coding, Physicians/Providers, clinical caregivers, Medical Group Operations Leadership, Provider Compensation, Clinical Informatics, Compliance, and other partners.
Provides on-site coding and documentation education and feedback related to coding changes (CPT including E&M, modifiers, ICD, and HCPCS), annual code updates, payer requirements, and payer rejection resolution to assigned Physicians/Providers. Performs regular rounding at sites and departments to provide adequate on-site support.
Orientates all Physicians/Providers, residents/students and clinical caregivers on coding and documentation related education.
Coordinates responses to Physician/Provider questions and feedback from various sources and partners, including Compliance, Provider Compensation, and Clinical Informatics.
Queries Physicians/Providers prompted by Physician Coding Department Coders to assist in resolving coding and documentation questions. Relays any coding changes, feedback, and education to Physicians/Providers as appropriate.
Attends and provides coding and documentation information, as requested, to Physician/Provider and/or Clinic/Site Department meetings.
Attends Physician/Provider education that include coding and/or documentation topics, such as Documentation Specialist Provider on-line review meetings, HCC/RAPS meetings, and Compliance reviews/meetings.
Reviews and provides coding and/or documentation guidance on order entry, diagnosis, and charge capture preference lists as well as SmartSets and templates.
Develops Physician/Provider specialty monthly reports to continually educate and communicate updates. Communicates Physician/Provider new services to Physician Coding Department Leadership.
Identifies and/or prompts documentation improvement as well as charge capture opportunities.
Maintains current knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and other regulatory requirements pertaining to nationally accepted coding policies and standards.
What it Will Take:
Licenses & Certifications
Professional Coder (CPC) certification issued by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), or
Coding Associate (CCA) certification issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P) certification issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
Health Information Administrator (RHIA) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
Health Information Technician (RHIT) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or
Specialty Coding Professional (SCP) certification issued by the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Compliance (BMSC).
Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Coding Specialist.
Required Functional Experience
Typically requires 5 years of experience in expert-level professional coding experience and at least 2 years of experience in education/training of licensed providers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and regulatory requirements.
Excellent communication (oral and written), adult education, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships primarily with employed Physicians and other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), but also other caregivers and Medical Group Operations leaders. Intermediate computer skills including the use of Microsoft office products, electronic mail, including exposure or experience with electronic coding systems or applications.
Excellent organization, prioritization, problem solving, facilitation skills as well as the ability to have meaningful, albeit, difficult conversations with Physicians/Providers.
Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills with a high attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment and decision making.
Ability to meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
Varied First Shift Hours to accommodate providers and will provide flexibility in weekly schedule. The Liaison role is eligible for blended work model, where individuals can work three days on site and two days remotely after training and meeting competencies for the role.
