The Southern Poverty Law Center's Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI) provides high-quality, pro bono legal representation to immigrants detained in the southeastern United States.
SIFI currently provides legal representation in release (bond, parole, and habeas corpus), deportation defense, and civil rights cases to immigrants imprisoned at the five largest immigration detention centers in the Southeast: the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, GA; the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, GA; the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Folkston, GA; the LaSalle ICE Processing Center in Jena, LA, and the Pine Prairie ICE Processing Center in Pine Prairie, LA. SIFI's four offices are in or near the towns where the detention centers are located. Each office has a Lead Attorney, two or three Direct Services Attorneys and one or two Project Coordinators. Pro bono attorneys, law students, and volunteer interpreters regularly join the SIFI on-the-ground teams for week-long shifts to expand SIFI's legal representation, focusing on release cases but also including immigration merits cases, high-impact advocacy, and individualized advocacy.
SIFI seeks a Part-Time Administrative Assistant to support our legal staff and volunteers in the SIFI Ocilla, GA office.
Primary Job Functions:
- Assists SIFI staff attorneys, pro bono attorneys, volunteers, and Project Coordinators with case management and administrative support as directed;
- Handles printing, copying, scanning, and distribution of documents as directed, including within SIFI's case management system;
- Creates and maintains legal files;
- Processes requisitions, invoices, and expense vouchers as directed;
- Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail, packages, faxes, etc.;
- Catalogs, orders, and maintains office supplies;
- Provides administrative process support to staff on mail, FedEx, interoffice mail, postage meter, fax machine, printers, copiers, supplies, phone systems, outlook calendar, IT help ticket system, etc.;
- Updates the shared office calendar as assigned by SIFI staff, to plan for volunteers, any travel by SIFI staff, and dates related to immigration court proceedings;
- Assists staff with travel arrangements, including hotel, airfare, and rental car reservations, as needed; and
- Provides backup to Project Coordinator(s) and SIFI staff, as assigned.
Education and Related Work Experience:
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) proficiency strongly preferred but not required;
- College degree or equivalent experience preferred but not required;
- Experience with office administration strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication, telephone, and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent writing/grammar skills;
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and case management systems and/or databases managing large volumes of documents;
- Excellent organization and time management skills;
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands;
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team;
- Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines;
- Must be highly organized and possess the ability to prioritize work;
- Must be able to work under pressure.

This is a permanent, part-time position (20 hours/week). We require a minimum one-year commitment from all SIFI staff.
