Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000 (Annually)
Description: The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has an immediate need for a Controller who will lead a general accounting team and is responsible for the planning and direction of all accounting operational functions for accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash management, budget, internal and external audit, and all regulatory and compliance reporting according to GAAP accounting principles.
The Controller leads accounting operations that support various revenue models including membership, program, childcare, grant and contribution funded programs, transitional housing and clinical services. This environment has a high volume of deposit and payment transactions, 1st and 3rd party billing, grant administration activities, insurance billing and payments. The various revenue models also drive a diverse set of vendors and a high volume of purchase orders and accounts payable activities. This position facilitates across the organization timely and accurate financials in line with accounting standards. This includes 13 membership branch locations, 27 childcare locations, a recovery housing and clinical services location and multiple departments.
Develops and administers approved accounting policies and procedures throughout the YMCA and works with business units to develop operating procedures and internal controls to strengthen the organization.
Coordinates and supervises cash position, reserves and forecasts through disbursements, receipts and collections, and various cash reserve processes. Ensuring efficient and effective cash management in a high volume billing and payment application environment.
Administers and maintains accounting systems software, controls, and user access and security to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA.
Supervises and approves all journal entries and reconciliations of YMCA including bank accounts and all other balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis. All reconciling items must be documented, researched and resolved.
Manages purchase order and accounts payable processes in a high volume decentralized purchasing organization maintaining 1,000 Vendors and over 800 payments monthly. Ensures proper approval and recognition of liabilities, on time payments and reporting of process performance.
Hires, trains, supervises and leads all accounting staff, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, grants management and general accounting areas.
Serves as resource to management and program staff in all accounting matters relating to accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, and financials.
Prepares any financial statements required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.
Facilitates key functions such as annual independent audit. Develops and maintains key relationships, including with banks and insurers. Leads the administration and technical support of the annual budget process and support across the organization and ongoing monthly forecast process.
Prepare various internal and external reports, including reports for various regulatory agencies (federal, county, state, city and other) as well as lending covenant reporting.
Drive a culture of continuous improvement process and accountability to improve quality, profitability and customer satisfaction.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or business related field.
CPA, MBA, Six Sigma Certification (preferred).
Two years managing a general ledger system.
Five years of experience or more in a supervisory accounting role.
Some experience in a nonprofit environment preferred.
Ability to lead, develop and motivate teams.
Ability to multitask, manage and communicate priorities.
Proven collaboration and communication skills across teams and organizational levels.
Sound knowledge of GAAP, accounting principles, rules, regulations, policies, and best practices.
High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
High proficiency in Microsoft Excel with advanced abilities.
Knowledge of high volume billing and payment processes.
Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting and business systems.
Possess high level of integrity, and judgement and discretion with sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, results oriented, and data driven environment.
