The primary responsibility of the Elections Office Intern is to provide professional assistance to the Director of Elections/General Registrar and the Electoral Board or their designee.
Work involves performing tasks and duties related to voter registration and election activities in accordance with the Code of Virginia, State and Federal election laws, and the policies and procedures set forth by the Virginia State Board of Elections. Work is performed independently with general supervision and oversight by the Director of Elections/General Registrar or their designee.
Assist with the Absentee and Early Voting process.
Assist with the voter registration process.
Assist with the Election Officer (Poll Worker) Program.
Assist with general office administrative duties.
Assist with the Absentee and Early Voting Process:
Process absentee applications and assist with the by-mail absentee process.
Assist with in-person early voting operations and processes, including interacting with voters and answering voters’ inquiries.
Assist with the Registration Process:
Process voter registration applications and assist with voter correspondence.
Process and record incoming and outgoing mail.
Assist with the Election Officer (Poll Worker) Program:
Assist with the preparation of election officers’ training including checking attendance, setting up the training location, and conducting a follow-up with election officers.
Maintain communications with officers to foster and retain interest.
Assist with the General Office Administrative Duties:
Maintain all phases of office record system including organization of paper, digital filing, filing, etc.
Packing and preparing elections supplies for precinct deliveries.

Requires a high school diploma and some clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Interns interested in receiving academic credit must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a closely related field.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to learn federal, state, and local political structures, laws, and policies related to election administration and voter registration including the ability to adapt to the constant changes in laws and policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with other employees, City officials, and the public.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office and basic office equipment.
Additional Desirable Qualification:
Availability to work early morning, late evening, on weekends, and some Holidays during peak election period.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must be a registered voter of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must have a valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Elections Office intern will be expected to report to work at the Elections Office located at 10455 Armstrong St. Ste 300 Fairfax, VA 22030, up to 20 hours per week. Specific hours will be coordinated with the Elections Office staff. If applicable, interns will be given access to a computer and an email address (interns are not expected to check email after hours).
Interns will receive either academic credit or compensation. Please indicate your preference in your cover letter.
