SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Accounting Manager has responsibility for initiating, monitoring and managing NatureServe's finance and accounting activities (which includes grants accounting) to ensure sound fiscal management and accuracy in reporting. Daily work requires extensive contact with NatureServe staff at all levels and thus, an ability to provide excellent service across the organization to a diverse array of operating units.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Oversee Accounting, Finance, and Grants and Contracts functions:
Supervision of accounting staff. Oversight of the timely, accurate and complete functioning of all accounting processes including: A/R, A/P, G/L, Payroll and Reconciliation functions.
Manage working capital and monitor banking activities of the organization.
Prepare, review, and analyze financial reports, quarterly forecasts and the annual organizational budget.
Monitor endowment performance; coordinate draws and contributions and manage corporate credit line and charge accounts.
Manage and improve the finance & accounting systems and processes to support the needs of the organization. This includes the updates, implementation, troubleshooting and oversight of a computerized accounting and financial reporting system, as well the updating of accounting instructions policies and procedures for the organization.
Maintain primary contact and assist in the oversight of various financial vendors including: audit, banking, and payroll.
Interpret programmatic rules and regulations to ensure compliance with all federal, state, local and contractual guidelines by ensuring that all government regulations and requirements are disseminated to appropriate personnel and compliance is monitored periodically. Review key terms of grants, contract, and subcontract agreements prior to submission for signature.
Monitor systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization and oversee federal awards and programs.
Coordinate activities of independent auditors ensuring all A-133 audit issues are resolved and compliance issues are met.
Attend Board and Committee meetings and serve as primary staff liaison to the Board's Audit, Finance & Endowment Committees.
Coordinate with Human Resources to support office services, facilities management, and benefits administration functions:
Negotiate office services contracts and (i.e., office leases, equipment leases, business insurance).
Evaluation and pricing of annual health insurance renewals.
Assist with 401k plan administration, including annual discrimination testing, DOL filings preparation, and audit (when required).
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration.
Five to seven years of hands-on financial and mid-level management experience with the day-to-day financial operations of a mid-size organization.
At least three years of experience working with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Experience with financial reporting and analysis, indirect cost recovery and allocation and project accounting and analysis.
A minimum of 3-5 years of managing year-end financial and federal audits (OMB Circulars, A133).
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to adapt skills and solutions to a diversity of situations.
The ability to develop and deliver financial support services and training to individuals and teams across the organization.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong affinity to customer service.
Ability to handle and maintain sensitive/confidential information with tact, courtesy, diplomacy and discretion.
Advanced knowledge on Microsoft Office suite
Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Experience with not-for-profit accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Federal Uniform Administrative Guidance (formerly OMB Circulars A-122 and A-133), grant and contract compliance requirements, and Federal Acquisition Regulations.
Experience with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans.
Experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL, and / or Unanet Project ERP Software
Experience monitoring current trends, developments, and theories in Financial best practices and strategies. Interest and/or commitment to the preservation of biodiversity.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work during standard office hours
Ability to move or adjust light computer and peripheral equipment
Ability to hear well and speak clearly frequently and effectively to engage with staff
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
Ability to travel independently to attend meetings
Ability to stay focused and maintain composure handling multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
