In support of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY)’s mission, the RESTORE Paralegal has responsibility for supporting the RESTORE Attorney in providing legal services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. RESTORE Sexual Assault Services is a program of PPCWNY and provides immediate crisis intervention and support services to people of all ages and their loved ones impacted by sexual violence regardless of when the assault took place. RESTORE services include: crisis intervention, short term counseling, support groups, support through medical examinations and treatment, advocacy and support during law enforcement interactions and the court process including court accompaniment.
Essential Functions
  • Assists RESTORE Attorney in developing a new holistic, trauma informed legal practice based out of Warsaw, New York
  • Supports the RESTORE Attorney in providing legal services to survivors of domestic violence in Wyoming County Family Court and other civil proceedings
  • Supports the RESTORE Attorney in representing survivors of sexual assault in civil legal matters
  • Drafts letters, pleadings, court orders, and motions for attorney review
  • Communicates with clients and schedules client appointments
  • Performs investigation, records review, and other tasks in preparation for client trials
  • Prepares applications for victim compensation with the Office of Victim Services
  • Provides administrative support to the RESTORE Attorney
  • Works collaboratively with the other RESTORE Paralegal, maintaining familiarity with the other’s work in order to provide back-up
  • Facilitates referrals as a partner in the Crime Victims Legal Network
  • Engages in trainings and conferences
  • Participates in collaborative community efforts to improve services to survivors
  • Shows respect to all internal and external clients for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints, and needs in areas such as race, gender, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation and others
Other Accountability Activities
  • Must participate in rape crisis training, and commit to at least two on-call shifts per month, including one week night and one weekend 24-hour shift, on a rotating basis with all staff, as well as holidays, providing coverage to all counties RESTORE serves: Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.
  • Minimum of two years paralegal experience
  • Associates degree in paralegal studies or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified paralegal preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • General PC skills needed, including use of all Microsoft Office programs and Outlook
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with human services and/or social work
  • Family law and divorce experience preferred
  • Knowledge of criminal law and procedure preferred
  • Experience serving rural populations preferred
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid NYS driver’s license not in jeopardy of being revoked; ability to respond to emergency calls within thirty minutes when on call

Work ScheduleThis is a full-time position; regular schedule will be 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend duties, as well as on call responsibilities.
