Organization and Position Summary
Shrub Oak International School is a world-class, private, special education boarding and day school preparing students for on the autism spectrum to live more meaningful lives. We serve the sophisticated needs of an international co-ed population of young adults on the Autism Spectrum. Our innovative relationship-based model grounded in evidence-based principles builds on students' strengths and interests, maximizing therapeutic and learning opportunities. Our renowned experts work with students to individualize life and career development paths based on each student’s specific needs and interests. Each student’s team of clinicians, teachers, and student- life staff collaborate closely to address the student’s issues quickly and reinforce therapies and learning paths, so that the student progresses more rapidly. Our modern, technology-infused facility is set on 127 acres of agriculture and farmland where students learn in a natural environment full of sensory experiences. Our graduates live independently and have a purposeful, self-sustaining future, to the best of each student’s ability. After a few years of operation, Shrub Oak will have close to 600 staff and 390 students.
Under the direction of the Farm Manager, the Farm specialist will be integrally involved in the overall care and maintenance of Shrub Oak International’s growing farm and farm animals (primarily sheep). His/her experience and knowledge, infused with a love of the land and animals, will allow Shrub Oak students to use our outdoor lands as a unique and individualized learning platform. Under the direction of the Farm Manager, he/she will have significant interaction with our staff/and students.
Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position
Ensure the appropriate feeding and watering of farm animals
Clean and disinfect the yards, and living areas of farm animals
Proactively examine animals to detect symptoms of illness, injury, or disease, and check physical characteristics to ensure appropriate growth and health
Groom, clip, trim animals, and/or shearing, skirting and carting fleece as needed
Use brands, tags, or tattoos to mark animals to identify ownership as needed and required
Herd animals to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures
Provide medical treatment, such as administering medications and vaccinations; or arrange for veterinarians to provide more extensive treatment after discussing with Farm Manager
Shift animals between grazing areas to ensure sufficient access to food
Perform duties related to reproduction, such as breeding animals as appropriate
Operate and service farm machinery as needed and appropriate such as trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed to animals and handle farm management responsibilities
Inspect, maintain and repair equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards and fences
Maintain records on animals, growth, feeding, production and cost records
Order food for animals and farming supplies as needed, and arrange for its delivery
Protect farm and herds from natural predators
The desire and ability to effectively engage and productively communicate and interact with students and staff to teach them about the workings of the farm and farm animals under the direction of the Farm Manager
Any and other responsibilities that are needed and required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of animal care and farming practices
Minimum of 3 years caring for farm animals, with sensitivity and care
Problem solving skills
The ability to demonstrate initiative to handle the required work
Ability to flexibility change course to meet competing job demands and needs
The ability to work as part of collaborative team within the department and with those in other department
Desire and ability to work with our students to create a safe and comfortable learning environment, under the direction of the farm manager
Valid driver’s license, in good standing
The work is performed primarily on the farm and outside campus. The work is regularly performed in a combination with the office site buildings and throughout the external grounds, and can be exposed to among other things, the environment, dust, odors, oil and noise,
Workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; Work regularly requires sustained concentration, and considerable physical effort and/or manual dexterity; and the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
The position responsibilities are physically rigorous and performed in an outdoor environment, requiring continuous lifting, climbing, bending, hoeing, planting, picking.
He/she must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, dexterity to use tools related to job, handle manure, chemicals related to the work. Requires walking, standing, climbing, reaching overhead and bending.
Ability to use and safely operate heavy machinery and farming tools.

This is a full time position, which will require work on the weekends given needs and demands require
