Kingsborough Community College was founded in 1963 and is one of 23 campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) system and offers liberal arts education, as well as career training programs. Kingsborough has been named one of the leading community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. It has also earned national recognition for its creative and effective use of learning communities, for the large number of degrees it confers, for the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and for the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus every year.

Kingsborough serves a widely diverse population of approximately 14,000 students. Approximately 70% of Kingsborough’s students are enrolled in a liberal arts or science degree program; the rest pursue degrees in more specialized, career-oriented programs such as business, communications, criminal justice, culinary arts, nursing and allied health careers, information technology, journalism, maritime technology, tourism and hospitality, and the visual arts. The college takes pride in its many support programs that enhance student success. All students are offered individual, personal and academic counseling; workshops to improve basic skills; and career planning and placement. ASAP at Kingsborough serves approximately 2400 students across most majors. Consisting of nearly 30 full-time and more than 20 part-time staff members, ASAP is a comprehensive service program which strategically interacts with areas across the campus to ensure student momentum toward degree completion and preparation for success post-graduation.

The ASAP Program Director, through strong leadership and managerial practices, oversees all aspects of the program ensuring equity in processes and delivery of supports and services. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Success Programs, within the Office of Academic Affairs, duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing, assessing and improving a comprehensive program of academic advising, career and professional development, and other support and financial aid services
  • Developing, implementing and assessing strategies to improve retention and performance of ASAP students
  • Evaluating program services and developing interventions for probation and at-risk students
  • Overseeing program’s budget and daily administration including scheduling and timely delivery of services
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships across campus to ensure that recruitment, advisement, tutoring, professional development and financial aid processes are student focused and inclusive.
  • Overseeing recruitment of new students into the program on a semester basis
  • Preparing reports for CUNY Central Office ASAP Program and college leadership
  • Supervising three Associate Directors who in turn supervise all other staff
  • Attending monthly meetings at CUNY Central, and other periodic program events
  • Participating in campus wide collaborations to enhance student experiences
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Success Programs

Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in an appropriate discipline and eight years related experience.

The preferred candidate will have:
Demonstrated management and supervisory skills as well as budget oversight and planning experience

Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators

Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills

Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities

Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite and aptitude to learn new systems as needed

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, and inter-personal).
  • Experience with a cohort/caseload advisement model
  • Understanding of and experience with student success focused programs.
  • Excellent multi-tasking ability and responsiveness to time-sensitive requests.
  • Strong fiscal management skills, including familiarity with fiscal requirements and budgets of special programs.
  • Understanding of the organization of public higher education systems.
  • Familiarity with issues faced by community college/associate degree students, especially in urban settings.

Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) helps students earn their college degree as quickly as possible, by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront. Key ASAP program features include a consolidated block schedule, cohorts by major, required full-time study and comprehensive advisement and career development services. The Director oversees all activities related to ASAP and represents the College's ASAP program within and outside the College.

Develops and implements policy to meet the Program's mission, collaborating with other College units

Administers a comprehensive portfolio of services, and assesses the various components of the ASAP program to improve services to students

Provides a highly-supportive environment by overseeing staff such as advisors and job developers and by developing relevant programs, workshops, and activities

Manages tracking, reporting, and analysis of outcomes data, and systems to track and manage individual students' progress

Manages staff and budget consistent with program goals

Performs related duties as assigned
