Pfizer is making significant investment in the creation of novel, first-in-class therapeutics, by combining internal discovery and validation of drug targets with external partnerships to produce clinical drug candidates for the Pfizer pipeline. This position is within a newly created Emerging Sciences Biology (ESB) group within Target Sciences (TS). Target Sciences has expertise in human genetics, functional genomics, automated analytic capabilities and data management, and target validation biology. Target Sciences works together with Pfizer’s nationwide Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) within Pfizer broader External Science & Innovation group to deliver a broad and deep pipeline of drug candidates, based on emerging science in the academic world.
The primary responsibility of the newly created Emerging Science Biology team is to play a driving role in addressing the critical task, identified as a gap, of rejuvenating the WRD pipeline with innovative, differentiated First-In-Class/ Only-In-Class programs in the years to come. This will be addressed by generation of strong data packages from target hypotheses derived from academic outreach and initiatives incl. ITENs, from human genetics, functional genomics and data mining to enable the initiation of new CTI and RU projects.
The candidate will be an essential member of the Target Sciences Emerging Science Biology Team. He or she will be able to work independently and creatively to design and execute key experiments to address the basic and translational biology of novel drug targets, their molecular pathways, and their connection to human disease. The candidate will be expected to support projects in one or more therapeutic areas of interest to Pfizer including Immunology, Oncology, Immuno-Oncology, Neurodegenerative Disease, etc.
The candidate will perform in vitro studies utilizing molecular, biochemical, and cellular techniques to understand the drug targets role in disease biology and to validate the activity of candidate drugs. The qualified candidate will be an individual contributor to highly matrixed multidisciplinary teams collaborating closely with target Science, CTI / RU colleagues, academic partners, and various Pfizer R&D partner-lines to ensure seamless and efficient advancement of projects to meet aggressive project deliverables, goals, and timelines.
A key responsibility of this candidate will be the evaluation, characterization, and validation of drug candidates in the appropriate cellular, biochemical, and functional assays designed and developed by the incumbent. The applicant will be required to work on multiple independent projects, simultaneously supporting multiple therapeutic development project teams. She or he will be expected to present results, updates, and recommendations at regular project team meetings. The candidate will be expected to fully embrace and embody the entrepreneurial spirit and biotech-like culture, values, and goals of Target Sciences and the wider Emerging Science & Innovation Function and contribute to creating and exciting, productive, collaborative, and scientifically rigorous working environment.
BS/MS in molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field with 5 or more years of experience conducting laboratory research
Industry experience and experience with the drug development process is desirable
Experience in one or more of the following is desirable: immunology, metabolic disease, oncology, or neuroscience
Experience in target discovery and validation is highly desirable.
Ability to succeed in a small, interactive, non-traditional drug-discovery environment
Experience in the design, execution, and analysis of cellular, molecular, and/or biochemical experiments and assays.
Technical skills should also include experience with most or all of the following: PCR, RT-PCR, TaqMan, cell-based assays (e.g. cellular cytotoxicity, proliferation, reporter, ligand binding, etc. with multiple readouts), Western blotting, immunocytochemistry.
Experience with biochemical analyses such as Octet, ELISA, MSD, and others is preferred
Highly collaborative with a strong desire to make simultaneous contributions to multiple independent projects in a highly matrixed organization.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
