Job Description
IBM is hiring a User Research Intern for our Foster City, CA location. Join the first group of dedicated user researchers in IBM! As a member of the Hybrid Cloud Design organization, you'll work with our researchers to support many different IBM products and and teams. Sometimes your projects will last 2 days or 2 weeks or 2 months. Through it all, you'll be supported by a close-knit and talented team of User Researchers who will mentor you and provide opportunities to grow your responsibility, visibility and impact.

Our products range from pure cloud offerings to hybrid cloud applications and on-premise installations. We support IBM's premier cloud platform and other Fortune 500 on-premise enterprise offerings.


We work within product teams and across entire portfolios to make IBM products better for our users. Our work includes activities like usability assessments, interviews, journey and empathy mapping, design studio sessions, surveys, and data analysis to uncover market and user needs and expectations.

Our group is made up of those with years of deep research expertise and brilliant university hires using new tools and methodologies. We share our methods and tooling across IBM, and continually teach each other new and best practices.


You're an aspiring User Researcher with proven skills in uncovering unarticulated user needs and solving real user problems. You don't want to be the first researcher in your next job, you want to be the 20th or 30th so you can accelerate your growth.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Demonstrated use of uw34 research methodologies including primary and secondary research
Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into specific, prioritized recommendations to improve product designs
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including techniques to persuade and negotiate and the ability to articulate alternative approaches
Demonstrated storytelling and presentation skills

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

B.S. in Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Anthropology, Sociology, or related discipline preferred
