Position is located in the Nash County Maintenance Unit. This position requires manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance of highways and construction of secondary roads. Work includes operating various types of highway equipment, installing erosion control devices, installing temporary traffic control devices, flagging, crack sealing, asphalt patching, installing pipe culverts, operating hand and power tools, monitoring tasks performed by inmates, clearing right-of-way and responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, and any other assigned tasks. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and overtime as needed during adverse weather or other extreme conditions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor
Additional Expectations:
Ability to operate small/tandem dump truck and perform manual labor tasks. Visual acuity is required. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and oils. Safety toe footwear is preferred. A valid Class "A" CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain a CDL permit within 60 days and a CDL License within 90 days is required. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirement Possession of a current Commercial Driver s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.
