The Director of IT Communications and Change Management is responsible for the planning, development and execution of communications, change management, policy development, web strategy, and web maintenance for the IT organization and associated university-wide IT projects.
The Director manages staff members engaged in these activities and also develops written and electronic materials, performs outreach to the university community and other IT organizations, across industries, to increase IT awareness, while overseeing complex web and communications projects.
The Director will routinely send university-wide communications and is responsible for overseeing the drafting and editing of materials for distribution, including managing and overseeing development of IT policies and procedures.
The Director leads the IT change management and is responsible to provide change management service and support across all IT, including but not limited to IT Capital Projects.
The Director will manage web technology projects and tools selection projects. This role will guide advancement priorities by communicating IT strategy and services to highlight the critical role WashU IT plays in delivering an integrated and secure technology environment.
The Director will stay closely aligned with Public Affairs and will support the Washington University communication and publication standards including formats, style, language and logo standards.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Create new opportunities for increased WashU IT communications across all university audiences. Manage a team of communications professionals, working closely with leaders in the WashU IT organization and external resources as necessary, to develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan. Increase awareness of IT programs, strategies, initiatives, and services while developing internal materials for presentations to general audiences (EDUCAUSE, university administration, unit representatives, etc.) on subject matter specified by senior management and the Chief Information Officer. Serves as the chief media relations contact for all media requests for information.
Responsible for ensuring change initiatives related to the implementation of new technologies meet objectives on time and on budget by increasing employee adoption and usage. A key element of the role is to develop IT change management as a core competency in conjunction with establishing a high performing team. The scope of the function includes but is not limited to understand the drivers of change, performing impact assessments, planning, education and curriculum development, training delivery and project communications.
Responsible for managing and coordinating the design, development, and maintenance of the WashU IT web presence (it.wustl.edu, cio.wustl.edu, et al) with strategic direction from the Chief Information Officer to ensure alignment of the web site, including content, and digital materials with WashU IT organizational standards and objectives. Manage and direct the WashU IT communications team while maintaining relationships with Public Affairs and other relevant areas with web presences. Collaborate with other web groups on campus to develop web policies, guidelines, procedures, and standards for the WashU IT web presence. Maintain a thorough and current understanding of all technology and other media relative to providing web services within WashU IT. Support IT technical teams in communications and awareness of service value and operations. Provide communication integration and support to project owners, resources, project managers and staff.
Collaborate with information technology professionals across the university. Develop communication strategies and change management strategies, including planning events, creating documentation, and other communication to keep the university aligned and informed on IT policy, procedures, and technology changes affecting faculty, students, and staff that use technology at the university. Build a shared set of program goals, metrics and measures. Provide regular, frequent, and thoughtful reports that show advancement in programs and maintain team engagement.
Send routine, urgent and emergent university-wide communications during normal business hours and off-hours, as required. May draft and edit materials in advance of communication events. Leads oversight of distribution list maintenance.
Other duties as assigned at the direction of the Chief Information Officer.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field (marketing, communications, public relations, engineering, information technology, etc.) or an equivalent of education and experience, plus 7 years of directly related professional work experience, including creating and implementing communication strategy.
Experience and demonstrated success in managing staff, preferably in a technical environment.
Experience with technical writing and IT policy development.
Knowledge of web content management systems, web page editing tools, publication media, and web page development.
Ability to learn and adopt new technologies and lead large, complex communication campaigns.
Master’s degree in a related field (marketing, communications, business, public relations, engineering, information technology, etc.).
Demonstrated success and experience with strategic communications, preferably in higher education or another complex professional field, in a large and complex organization.
Thorough knowledge of communications principles and techniques for distributing information
Knowledge of change management principles and techniques
Strong understanding of information technology concepts
Establish and maintain relationships across the university community, at all levels
Capability to lead a team to accomplish organizational goals by communicating clear expectations, and planning, monitoring and providing performance feedback including coaching and counseling
Demonstrated experience driving website creation, improvements and analytics
Understanding of HTML and website development graphic design principles
Ability to edit and analyze materials prepared by others with abbreviated turnaround time
Superior project management skills; ability to influence and engage peers
Demonstrated results developing large complex communication campaigns
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment while anticipating future needs
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
The hiring range for this position is $78,874 - $104,499 annually.
