Headed by an elected state official, the Office of the Secretary of State is responsible for administering elections within the state, registering corporations and charities that do business within the state, collecting and preserving the records of governmental bodies within the state, and maintaining the Washington State Library. Operations is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. Within operations are five major programs: 1) Information Technology and Telecommunications; 2) Human Resources; 3) Financial Services; 4) Facilities Management; and 5) Budget.

Information Technology and telecommunications provides services to all other divisions in the office and includes external customers for some divisions. This position maintains expertise in a wide range of technology and their application to our customers.

Information Technology Specialist 4 - Network Support
Permanent, Full Time

This position is a senior level position that reports to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Office of the Secretary of State. It is located in the operations division and is responsible for ensuring network connectivity, security, and network redundancy operations for digital archives. Other duties of this position include the management of networked servers, server and network design, space allocations for projected digital growth, onsite and offsite data backup administration.


Daily management of the digital archives servers (file, application, SQL, print, web):

Administers the server environment, including the allocation of disk storage, server design, management, configuration, and operation
Ensures servers and server software are kept up-to-date (Microsoft releases, Hot Fixes, Cumulative updates (CUs), virus scan, and applications software updates)
Replaces defective server hardware as needed (power supplies, hard drives, fans, system boards, removable media, and expansion cards or hardware)
Proper server rack management, including cable management
Works closely with the all office applications development groups, the IT helpdesk, and IT management on servers and systems ensuring minimal system downtime
Daily management of the digital archives network connections (CenturyLink, Cutting Edge, State Government Network (SGN))
Manages and maintains digital archives network infrastructure
Reviews security logs to provide the digital archives with secure network and data storage
Works with contracted internet service providers the digital archives office network connectivity issues (network outages, service calls)
Provides critical backup for digital archives servers and systems
Manages and maintains digital archives backup servers, backup networks, tape drives, and robotic tape libraries to provide backup for one of a kind, digitally-born, media
Tests backup systems for functionality – performs scheduled test data restores
Provides for backup and restoration of critical data
Manages offsite data storage
Makes recommendations on the replacement of old technologies (tape versus spinning disk backup, etc.)
Required Qualifications

Four (4) years of information technology experience (designing, installing, and maintaining security systems, including network firewalls, advanced intrusion detection and prevention hardware and related software, consulting, analyzing, designing, installing and/or maintaining server hardware and robotic tape backup systems, and network infrastructure equipment)
Experience working in data centers
Experience installing, operating, and maintaining Microsoft server operating systems, including virtual server environments
Desired Qualifications
Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality at all times
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Experience working with Linux server operating systems
Special Condition of Employment
Must possess a valid Washington State driver license
Must be able to pass a criminal background check
