TITLE: LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALISTQUALIFICATIONS: 1.A Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.2.Maintains a valid appropriate Massachusetts Department of Education certification as a school librarian, unified media specialist, or library media specialist.3.A proven ability to work in a polite and friendly manner with many different publics.4.Must possess a sense of humor.5.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Department may find appropriate and acceptable.REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Educational Technology and Instructional Media and/or Building Principals as appropriate.SUPERVISES: Assigned students and any assigned paraprofessionals as appropriate.JOB GOAL: To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to): 1.Operates and supervises the media center to which assigned. 2.Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new media center materials to meet the needs of different grade levels, interests, cultures and viewpoints. 3.Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program. 4.Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the media center acquires.
5.Makes a continual effort to integrate library media skills into the curriculum and avoids isolated school library media skills instruction. 6.Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system. 7.Culls obsolete and worn materials from the collections. 8.Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of media center resources.
9.Promotes appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities.10.Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.11.Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic on the invitation of the teacher.12.Participates at curriculum meetings.13.Arranges frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the media center's patrons.14.Assists in the preparation and administration of the media center budget.15.Facilitates the use of all formats of information: print, audio, visual electronic media and human resources.16.Develops and evaluates long-range plans for the facilitation of information technology.17.Provides access to and assistance in using computerized information sources, both in-house and on-line.18.Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.19.Maintains and improves professional competence especially as relates to the specific assignment and student grade and subject area appropriateness. 20.Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.21.Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.22.Supervises the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the media center.23.Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Coordinator of Educational Technology and Instructional Media and/or Building Principal as appropriate.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
