Under the general direction of a supervisor, provides technical hardware and software support for

Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) installations as a member of a network support team; provides technical support of enterprise connectivity; troubleshoots and installs workstation hardware and software, trains other personnel in the use of networked computer equipment; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative Only):

Troubleshoots and maintains MS Windows XP, Novell IntranetWare V 4.11, Internet,

LAN/WAN based network workstations, video and data communications monitors, switches and fiber optic technologies.

Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains all computer equipment and network level hardware and software, such as Netware Client 32 and Microsoft Client for Netware.

Installs and maintains network hardware, software and peripherals.

Insures software integration and compatibility between network hardware, including file servers, routers, bridges, hubs, connectors, etc.

Assists in network documentation - workstation details (CPU type, memory, devices, details); cabling details; server details, connectivity devices; and network protocols.

Evaluates computer equipment and networks prior to repair to determine feasibility of repair.

Documents installation and troubleshooting procedures, including questioning techniques and procedures for diagnosis and repair as well as assistance in the development of a network disaster recovery plan.

Maintains contacts with and evaluates technology vendors for the purpose of assessing product availability and obtaining pricing for parts, equipment, supplies, software and support.

Good knowledge of the installation, use, maintenance, and repair of computer equipment and networks.


Good knowledge of Windows XP, IntranetWare V 4.11, Internet, LAN/WAN based networks, voice, video and data communications, routers switches and fiber optic technologies.

Ability to instruct others.

Ability to interrelate well with others.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer

Science or closely related field and two (2) years of experience in hardware and software support in at least three of the following areas: Windows XP, IntranetWare V 4.11, NT V 4.0, Email and Internet.

Note: Up to one (1) year or required experience may be substituted in whole or in part by training and education in Electronics, Computer Science or a related field.

Special Requirement: At time of application, must possess, or be within twelve months of completing, certification as a Computer Network Administrator (CNA).
