The Microsoft Healthcare team is working at the intersection of computing and healthcare to invent and re-invent how technology could have a profound impact on healthcare and care delivery across the world. We are an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and medical doctors who endeavor to develop next-generation technologies for healthcare. Tasked with keeping Microsoft at the forefront of healthcare innovation, rock-turning and discovery is a key process for our team. We look for trends where a traditional problem can be turned into a computational problem. Computational microscopy and digital pathology are rapidly following this trend. We are looking for an innovative, collaborative, and highly motivated research intern to join our efforts in exploring computational microscopy or digital pathology fields to formulate problem statement, design, develop and implement proof of concepts that helps inform our innovation strategy and investment direction for these said fields.
Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
Microsoft Premonition is developing state-of-the-art robotic and genomic technologies to detect and monitor the flow of diseases in the environment – with the goal of predicting future disease epidemics (www.microsoft.com/premonition). Located within Microsoft's AI + Research division, the Microsoft Premonition team is a deeply collaborative and interdisciplinary group, which prides itself on fusing many technologies and perspectives to solve hard problems and make positive impacts on the world. We are looking for an intern to explore epidemiology research problems with the Premonition Team.

Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in EECS, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Genomics, Epidemiology, Virology, or a related STEM field.
- Publication record or product implementation record in bioinformatics or epidemiology
- Experience with cloud systems
- Experience with geospatial information systems
- Experience with epidemiological modeling
- Experience with python and python-based machine learning frameworks
- Some knowledge of evolutionary biology
- Some knowledge of pathogen dynamics
- Some knowledge of pathogen genomics
- Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
