Organization Background: The South Carolina Victim Assistance Network (SCVAN) is the voice for all victims of crime in South Carolina and the people who serve them. SCVAN seeks to fulfill three main objectives through its programs and services: 1) ensure all crime victims receive access to and assistance from the criminal justice system; 2) improve the quality of services provided to crime victims by victim advocates; and 3) ensure the criminal justice system adequately serves crime victims.

SCVAN manages five programs that provide services and resources to our state's crime victims and the professionals who serve them: 1) Faith-Based Victims Services; 2) Emergency Financial Assistance Fund; 3) Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV); 4) Statewide Forensic and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Coordinator; and 5) Crime Victim Information Program.

Reaching Rural, LAV’s new program operating from Beaufort and serving Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties, uses technology to increase legal access to crime victims through the use of videoconferencing, technology hubs, a new legal department website, and education, trainings, and community outreach. SCVAN attorneys provide direct representation in court in addition to support services, education, training, and technical assistance to victim service providers, law enforcement, community partners, and volunteer attorneys.

Position Description:

The Legal Access Coordinator is a full time (37.5 hours per week), salaried position with the LAV Reaching Rural project. The position will report directly to the Beaufort Senior Attorney and LAV Program Director and is responsible for outreach and administrative duties associated with the Reaching Rural project. The candidate should expect approximately 40% of their time to be devoted to outreach activities and 60% of their time to be devoted to administrative office duties.


  • Provide support, resources, and referrals to victims and victim service providers
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Beaufort Senior Attorney and Staff Attorney including but not limited to court scheduling, general correspondence, checking and sorting mail, monthly reimbursement & mileage forms, and maintaining client files
  • Collaborate with the project Attorneys to identify opportunities in the community to serve as an ambassador for the Reaching Rural project and coordinate, design, and implement current efforts to inform individuals and communities about Reaching Rural’s services
  • Engage in outreach across all seven (7) counties to spread awareness of our program and its technology by attending community & project partner events, meetings, and other relevant engagements
  • Design and develop community education materials, resource guides, and legal workshop/clinic marketing materials related to the project
  • Engage victims, victims service providers, and volunteer attorneys with technologies used with the project
  • Maintain office procedures, complete reporting forms and workplans, and other documentation as needed
  • Maintain documentation to ensure program effectiveness, track outreach activities, and support evaluation efforts
  • Manage communication between Reaching Rural staff and organizations that serve victims and members of the community
  • Perform other tasks as requested

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in community outreach and grassroots organizing
  • Effectively communicate the relevancy of using our technology and services to increase legal access
  • Outgoing and upbeat personality with a talent for establishing personal and community relationships
  • Enjoy learning, technology, and engaging in meaningful work
  • High degree of patience, dependability, creative problem-solving
  • Excellent writing skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Superior time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multi-task, exercise good judgment, and work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the nonprofit field
  • Knowledge of South Carolina’s criminal justice system, particularly from a crime victim’s standpoint
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse clients
  • Familiarity with Box and Clio file management/storage systems

Reports to: Senior Staff Attorney

Salary: Commensurate with experience; Monthly benefit stipend
