Environmental Health Specialist Trainees protect the environment, public health, and safety of San Diego County residents through permit, inspection, consultation, planning, investigation and enforcement activities in a wide variety of program areas. Environmental Health Specialist Trainees receive on-the-job training to perform basic inspections and investigations for compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A current evaluation letter from the California Department of Public Health* which states that the applicant is eligible to begin training in an approved environmental health program; AND,
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency with at least 30 semester units of core science coursework and laboratories as specified by California Department of Public Health (CDPH).*To contact the California Department of Public Health for information regarding the above education/experience standards and how to obtain an evaluation letter, please clickhere. You will be required to e-mail the State of California to request the REHS application package. If you do not qualify to be certified as an REHS but qualify as an EHS Trainee, you will be sent the evaluation letter from the California Department of Public Health which states that the applicant is eligible to begin training in an approved environmental health program. This is the letter required for this position. This process can take a minimum of 4-6 weeks;if you are interested in this position, BEGIN THIS PROCESS NOW.
