The Sustainability Research and Data analyst collects, interprets and validates sustainability data points from a variety of internal and external sources to help stakeholders, including investors, employees, policymakers and customers understand Black Hills Energy’s sustainability story. The research and data analyst works with a variety of internal subject matter experts, software programs and reports to prepare high-integrity environmental, social and governance (ESG) data for use in Black Hills Energy’s sustainability reports and ESG disclosures. Supports research of utility industry sustainability/ESG trends, renewables and technology; provides analysis of industry or sustainability studies and communicates findings with internal stakeholders.
SALARY RANGE: $62,850 - $94,200 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Identifies data owners, collects, analyzes and validates company’s sustainability data for use in ESG disclosures and communication.
Uses raw data, including financial, environmental, human resources and socio-economic data, to create meaningful statistics and progress against ESG goals.
Creates charts, infographics and basic modeling to illustrate trends and visually represent the data’s story.
Uses software and tools to create workflows and processes for ESG data collection and validation.
Understands data requirements for various ESG frameworks and provides data owners with specific requests for reporting timeframes, metrics and methodologies.
Ensures data points are used consistently across ESG frameworks and other published sources. Prepares reports and dashboards reflecting published data and sources.
Researches trends in ESG and utility industry, conducts research and benchmarking against peer companies and provides analysis and recommendations on ESG methodologies.
Supports scoping of company-commissioned studies and analysis of external sustainability studies and utilizes existing national methodologies and studies to understand implications at a state or local level.
Provides analysis of customer research and market studies for new sustainability programs and products.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading trade publications.
Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain strong working relationships within Sustainability & ESG team, as well as with Investor Relations, Environmental Services and Energy Innovation.
Collaborate with numerous internal data owners including Financial Reporting, Customer Service, HR, Accounting and Operations.
Maintain supportive and respectful working relationships with all Black Hills Energy employees, business units and departments.
Maintain professional relationships with all vendors.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in data science or analyzing data, processes, information systems and/or workflows is required.
Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Business, Political Science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel and PowerPoint, and data analytics software.
Strong knowledge of data analysis, data modeling, researching and methodologies
Experience in project management, from conception to delivery.
Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills
Strong analytical skills.
Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management.
Strong service and teamwork skills.
Familiarity with risk management and quality assurance control.
Hands-on experience with project management tools.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
High levels of self-motivation, curiosity, drive for solutions and creativity.
Ability to work productively in an environment where job requirements, knowledge, and priorities change rapidly.
Ability to maintain confidentiality; respect for multiple review process.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: use fingers and hands, communicate, and have close visual acuity. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: ascend/descend stairs, position self to access lower items, and move about the office. The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to: climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, pull and reach. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. No travel is required for this role.
