PortalsXR is hiring a Lead Artist / Art Director to define the artistic vision for location-based AR experiences, manage a small team of artists, and create high-quality 3D art assets. The ideal candidate is an experienced Lead Artist ready to transition into the role of Art Director or established Art Director working with immersive technologies.
A successful Lead Artist / Art Director must possess strong production-sensibilities, excellent communication skills, a disciplined self-starter, and passionate collaborator who enjoys working in an agile, interdisciplinary work environment. Most importantly, the candidate must be able to both establish a holistic artistic vision as well as utilize expert-level 3D generalist skills to conceptualize, create, iterate, optimize and polish a wide variety of 3D art assets.

Define holistic visual style for AR entertainment experiences and effectively communicate it to the team
Establish and maintain high production standards
Partner with product managers, engineers, and designers to see our projects through from concept to ship and beyond
Give and solicit real time feedback from other stakeholders to continually raise the quality and craftsmanship of the product
Work cross-functionally to find solutions that meet high-level creative vision, engineering constraints, and consumer metrics
Problem solve within game engines (Unity/Unreal) and mobile phones
Conceptualize, create, and modify production art assets including but not limited to: environmental art, props, characters, particle systems, lighting systems, textures
Use industry standard tools to create content
Direct small to medium-sized art team
Portfolio of work
Ability to demonstrate and execute multiple art styles with an emphasis in stylized aesthetics
Expert 3D generalist - modeling and texturing proficiency required, rigging and animation proficiency a bonus
5+ years of experience as a Senior Artist, Lead Artist, or Technical Artist
Self-motivated and results oriented with excellent communication skills
Experience supervising and driving projects from beginning to end
Experience directing team of multidisciplinary contributors, technical artists, 3D artists, etc.
Knowledge of game development including: art creation processes (both 2D and 3D), technology requirements, trade-offs, and challenges associated with development
Highly proficient using industry standard 2D and 3D art creation software such as – Adobe Creative Suite, Maya / 3ds Max, Modo, ZBrush, Cinema4D
Proficient concept/ideation sketching
Basic understanding of shaders

Degree in related field
Portfolio demonstrating compelling immersive real-time or AR/VR experiences
2+ VR/AR games or experiences shipped
Additional experience in lighting, VFX, game design, etc.
Exceptional visual and technical understanding of 3D modeling and texturing
Strong foundational skills including composition, design, and color theory
Technical experience in standard game engines such as Unity or Unreal and art pipelines
You are passionate about games and AR/VR
Prior startup experience
