About this opportunity
The Innovation and Sustainability Platform Director is responsible for all mid to long term research and development activities across the packaging sector, with a focus on sustainable packaging, as well as for leading the development of extruded film platforms. This position is responsible for implementation of necessary actions to deliver on committed growth through the development and successful commercialization of platform technologies, management of the team’s project portfolio, talent management of the team, and coordination of activities with the other R&D leaders and business unit stakeholders. This position will contribute to overall business strategy, innovation management systems, key account growth roadmaps, department budget/spending, and communications to internal and external groups including suppliers & customers.

What you will do

A member of the Innovation Lead Team
Overall responsibility to manage the team of research, film extrusion, and sustainability engineers
Overall responsibility for departmental, project, and capital budgeting/spending within the direct team’s scope
Overall responsibility for technology scouting programs, and internal request/approval process and project prioritization
Lead the creation, management, delivery, and communication of sustainability related projects and roadmaps
Overall responsibility for the completion of developments, for team milestones being met and communications to be distributed. Ensuring effective transition of new developments to manufacturing/R&D
Work to ensure communication and technology exchanges occur across Business Units and ensure goals are aligned with Marketing and Sales
Responsible for management of employees and all related talent management processes
Support special initiatives with Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Procurement, as required to ensure overall packaging objectives are met
Ensuring effective management and industrialization of strategic platform technologies
Manage the platform inno team, while working with various stakeholders, to drive high risk / high reward innovation programs targeted at growth across multiple segments
Sustainability platform developments; Work with marketing and R&D leads to ensure a robust pipeline of sustainable packaging. Create and maintain technology roadmaps
Technology Scouting and concept development; Identify emerging technology, screen applicability for our business, and drive projects to support industrializing these technologies
Partner Innovation; Develop and cultivate strategic relationships with raw material and filling machinery suppliers. Capture needs of markets and internal R&D colleagues, develop research and development initiatives, and drive related projects to industrialization
Project Portfolio make-up, Project Prioritization, and Spending; Work with Marketing and Innovation Lead Team to ensure we have the right project portfolio and priorities. Manage spend budget
Manage technology transfers; Coordinate efforts with other R&D Directors and their teams to transition platform technologies into customer specific projects. Ongoing support for platform technology development
Talent Management; Ensure all team members have strong development plans. Drive activities to strengthen engagement. Raise the bar on expectations and delivery

What you have to offer

4-year degree required minimum; Graduate degree is a bonus
15+ years of related experience in Flexible Packaging
Excellent knowledge of raw materials and processes related to flexible packaging
Management experience and proven leadership roles
Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
Strong business acumen, technical aptitude, and strategic mindset
