POSITION SUMMARY:

The Respiratory Therapy Educator collaborates with management and staff to plan, develop, and implement educational programming for employees within the Respiratory Therapy Department. The incumbent acts as a critical resource in the orientation and continuing education of Respiratory staff. The RT Educator is a clinical expert expected to maintain the skills and competencies required to provide direct patient care. In addition, the RT Educator assists with clinical policy review, delegation protocol development, and regulatory and certification readiness. The RT Educator applies innovative teaching strategies and methodologies to provide a cost-effective and well-executed clinical education program for the RT Department

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

· Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory (CoARC) accredited school for Respiratory Care

· Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy or Education is preferred.

· Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

· Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)

· Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience required; hospital experience preferred.

· One year of formal teaching experience preferred.

· Current BLS/ACLS/PALS/NRP Certification required (may obtain within 6 months of hire)

· Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) Certification preferred

· Must become BLS, ACLS, and PALS Instructor (Sub-specialties may require additional instructor courses)

· Organizational skills are necessary

· Good written and verbal communication skills required

· Ability to read, write, and speak English

· Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

· Entails cognitive and technical knowledge plus the ability to progressively manage professional health care education delivery across the continuum of care.

· Requires the ability to retrieve, communicate and present data and/or information both verbally and in writing -as is the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word.

· Must be flexible with work schedule since staff work weekends and/or nights.

· Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocols, procedures, and standards within area of respiratory therapy expertise.

· This position requires a sound knowledge of respiratory therapy practice, display of exceptional leadership abilities and promotion of hospitality principles in every day practice.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty.

● Ability to navigate, document, extract from and enter information into DHR Health’s Electronic Medical Record.

● Skilled in implementing 1:1 training; training to small and large groups, using various training materials and tools.

● Overseas the education and orientation processes for Respiratory Therapy employees

● Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements for department and staff.

● Ability to assess educational needs and develop applicable curricula.

● Working knowledge of established clinical and preceptorship models in the development of clinical education programs.

● Responsible for the day to day training of respiratory therapists

● Educates patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff.

● Ensures proper care, use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

● Collaborates closely with department leadership to align training with department gaps and hospital priorities

● Collaborates and assists Educators from other areas

● Develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive patient education programs that assure quality and appropriateness of care across settings.

● Maintains knowledge of current trends and practices in respiratory care through resources such as literature reviews, professional journals, and professional networking.

● Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
