SUMMARY

Serves as executive director of Educate Fairfax as defined in the foundation’s bylaws and business; in alignment with the strategic direction of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and in cooperation with the foundation’s board of directors (BOD), establishes Educate Fairfax as the preferred charitable education organization in the FCPS community; provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction to leverage and secure resources to produce positive, high impact outcomes for students, schools, staff, and the broader FCPS community; plans, organizes, and directs all activities and operations related to fundraising and collaborates with FCPS staff on business and community partnerships generally at the school division level; supervises and evaluates all activities, program functions, personnel, and physical resources of the assigned office.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Leads Educate Fairfax’s board of directors to position the organization as the preferred charitable education organization for FCPS by achieving identified goals through alignment of the division’s strategic priorities and Foundation priorities, providing the vision, leadership, and skills to secure and leverage available resources to produce positive, high impact outcomes for students, schools, staff,
FCPS, and the community.

2. Identifies needs and establishes a vision and priorities for future programs.
3. Develops and implements a marketing plan to establish Educate Fairfax as the preferred charitable education organization to support FCPS through donor relations and fundraising goals.
4. Develops a comprehensive fundraising program strategy, including already established and new fundraising events, planned giving, endowments, and grants to grow the foundation by established goals set by the BOD and FCPS.

5. Leads strategic planning to establish diversified short and long range donor relations and fundraising objectives, inclusive of endowments, events, and alumni groups.

6. Works closely with the Educate Fairfax BOD, businesses, Chambers of Commerce, and community-

based organizations to identify community resources, build and cultivate relationships with stakeholder groups, and provide information about engagement opportunities.

7. Liaises with the Division Superintendent or designee(s) for matters related to fundraising, programs, and sponsorships.

8. Collaborates with other FCPS staff on business partnership activities across the school division.
9. Confers with legal, accounting, auditing, and other experts in conjunction with Educate Fairfax’s BOD.
10. Collaborates with and/or supports schools, other offices and departments, and non-school agencies to accomplish the school division’s mission.
11. Researches successful education foundations in other school districts to incorporate findings and best practices for Educate Fairfax, including alternative funding sources and local, state, and federal grants.

12. Remains current on changes affecting the professional fund-raising community, conducts research for potential sources of funding, and executes on applying for said sources.

13. Develops, executes, measures, and reports the effectiveness of long-range marketing and public relations plans including fundraising, grant proposals, events, and other student programs.

14. Directs the completion of program statistics and ensures the development of appropriate reports and regulations, related to fundraising activities and business partnerships.

15. Ensures the fiscal health of Educate Fairfax by developing and tracking an annual budget and forecasts to report regularly to the BOD and FCPS representatives.

16. Oversees the preparation of required tax documentation to state and federal tax authorities.
17. Utilizes collaboration and leadership skills to effectively report progress to chief experience and engagement officer and BOD.
18. Establishes procedures and executes the screening, orientation, utilization, and recognition of volunteers, including FCPS students, who support the work of Educate Fairfax.
19. Executes on existing programs and events including the Hall of Fame event honoring alumni, teacher grants, and Kids in Need programs.
20. Sets agendas for BOD, executive committee, and other committee meetings throughout the year.
21. Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Receives direction from the chief experience and engagement officer and may receive general direction from the Educate Fairfax BOD. Oversees the recruitment, screening, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of lower graded personnel assigned to the office. Provides guidance and assistance to other full-, part-time, and/or hourly employees, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION-REQUIRED

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment.

EDUCATION-PREFERRED

Master’s degree.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE-REQUIRED

Seven (7) years of progressive experience in the specialty of the assigned office, some of which shall

have been in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE-PREFERRED

Experience serving as a fundraiser in a nonprofit organization.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSURE-REQUIRED

Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, functions, and current trends of administration of the office and the department to which assigned.
Knowledge of the Fairfax County business community and FCPS.
Public relations skills.
Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources to successfully carry out the function and programs of the office to which assigned.
Ability to supervise and lead.
Ability to be flexible and problem solve.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
