Job Summary
Performs a variety of professional librarian duties including reference, readers' advisory, and collection development.

What We Do
The Beverly Hills Public Library facilitates learning for patrons of all ages, encourages children to develop an ongoing interest in reading and serves as a literary and cultural center for the community. The Library provides a broad range of materials and services to meet the educational and recreational needs of its users.

What We're Looking For
Beverly Hills Public Library is seeking a part-time Librarian II, who has excellent research skills and familiarity with local history collections and can assist at public service desks. The ideal candidate has a strong customer service ethic and enjoys working with local history collections.

Work Hours
As-needed work shifts may include evening or weekend shifts. Mandatory training shifts will include weekdays, and may require half-day or full-day availability.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of the following components:

Oral Exam/Interview

Conviction History
As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City. If you are selected as a finalist, you will be contacted to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

Verification: Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process. Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Major Duties:

Assists patrons at public desks in using library materials and services; elicits and interprets information requests in person and by telephone; instructs and assists patrons in using the on-line catalog and in making effective use of the Library's collections; directs patrons to sources of information; provides readers' advisory services; assists patrons in research.
Researches, evaluates, and selects materials for the Library's collection in all formats, including books, magazines, CD-ROM and on-line services; maintains the collection; selects materials to be withdrawn.
Compiles bibliographies on specific topics; maintains files of materials and answers to patrons' questions.
Assists the Librarian III or the Senior Librarian in preparing reports and statistics; prepares and distributes handouts explaining the Library's services.
Plans and presents programs.
Assists in training and supervising subordinate staff, including interns, librarians, pages, and volunteers.
Attends meetings and represents the Library with schools, community agencies and organizations.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in Library Science and two years experience at a professional level.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to provide high level of commitment to public service.
Knowledge of standard library policies, practices and procedures.
Knowledge of standard library reference tools and sources of information.
Knowledge of bibliographic search procedures.
Skill in interpreting patrons' needs.
Skill in assisting patrons in answering reference questions.
Skill in locating materials.
Skill in evaluating and selecting materials in various formats.
Skill in promoting interest in libraries and reading.
Other requirements:

Some positions may require specialized training and experience in the areas of reference services, children's services, or fine and performing arts:REFERENCE: Extensive knowledge of and experience working with reference resources in print, CD-ROM and online formats in general reference subject areas.
