Full Job Description

JOB OVERVIEW

Artist studio in Los Angeles is seeking a Production Manager who is solution oriented with meticulous attention to detail and a team mentality. This position will work closely with the Artists and Studio Director to ensure quality execution of the Artists visions in a wide range of materials and fabrication processes both traditional and non. This role must excel at time management and have a high level of understanding of fabrication processes, materials and 3D rendering. The ability to adapt with grace under pressure and to meet ever changing deadlines is a requirement. This is a support position for the Artists and Studio Director. The Production Manager must be collaborative, enjoy leading, and be comfortable delegating day to day tasks to a small fabrication team with varying degrees of experience.

This position is expected to be 60-70% administrative/computer based + 30-40% hands on fabrication. Must have a valid drivers license and have the ability to drive a studio van/truck when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee day to day fabrication scheduling and planning, assign daily tasks and projects to the fabrication team. Maintain a current and up to date fabrication schedule.
Establish and lead daily production meetings with the fabrication staff and the Studio Director.
Identify bottlenecks ahead of time; Notify and work with Studio Director to address fabrication issues early.
Data Entry: Maintain current and up to date information in studio database and google archive for all artworks from Design through to completion.
First point of contact for all Vendors; Build and maintain relationships with outsourced fabrication vendors.
Work with Studio Director to build and cross train a fabrication team in various processes including full-time, part-time and freelance. Participate in the hiring and review process of fabrication staff.
Travel for onsite installation of artworks as needed.
Travel to vendors for quality reviews, drop off and pick up of artworks and parts.
Submit project scopes with outside fabricators to acquire bids; Place Purchase Orders and track out of house fabrication projects maintaining up to date working knowledge of status, quality and completion.
Work with Studio Director to establish project budgets.
Work with Artist’s to maintain a current working knowledge of artist’s processes
Develop and maintain process, maintenance, and installation manuals.
Fabrication of artwork including but not limited to painting, sculpting, and assembly. Materials include but are not limited to: wood, metal, textiles/upholstery, jewelry/beading; epoxy/plastics/rubbers, plaster, adhesives.
Artwork Maintenance & Repair including but not limited to sanding, polishing, cleaning and refinishing.
Maintain a clean and organized inventory of materials and parts; Source and purchase materials as needed; proactively maintain inventory to ensure on-hand availability of commonly used materials.
Assist Artists with maintenance of a highly organized materials reference library
Work with the Building Manager to establish equipment maintenance schedule.
Responsible for overseeing quality assurance of all completed artworks in studio.
3D Rendering: Work with Artists in the design stage of the process to create digital files, spec sheets, and renderings of artworks; Work with Artist’s and Archivist to create process manuals; Work with Artists to render 3D spaces for installation planning
Lead and Maintain a clean and organized shop at all times.
Serve as a point of contact for Museums, Clients and Galleries regarding installation processes, artwork maintenance, repairs and fabrication process.
Pack, Crate and Move artwork as needed, familiar with fine art handling..

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

8+ YEARS

Fabrication Experience

Metalworking (welding, general fabrication); Woodworking (general carpentry + various hardwoods & finishing); Moldmaking (lost wax, rubber, plaster); Painting (canvas, acrylic); Electrical/Lighting
BONUS: knowledge of Jewelry/beading, bronze casting, patinas, printmaking, ceramics, glass, resin or other materials.

Software Experience

Adobe Suite (Illustrator/In Design/Photoshop), Spreadsheets (Google Suite drive, sheets, cal, docs) and project management software
BONUS: experience with QBO

4+ YEARS

3D Modeling Experience

CAD, 3D rendering, 3D printing, 3D scanning
BONUS: Experience with Blender and/or computing/programming/coding experience

Scheduling/Management

Managing small teams, production scheduling and/or project management
Operating heavy equipment such as forklifts, cherry pickers etc.
