Full Job Description

The Fabrication Manager oversees the planning and organization of the fabrication process and ensures availability of necessary material, equipment and labor resources required for a project. The Manager oversees the hiring, orientation and training of technical fabrication employees to ensure a competent workforce. He or she assists with planning and directing an efficient layout of equipment and flow of materials. The Fabrication Manager ensures fabrication performance; volume and quality goals are met by utilizing efficient methods and maintaining appropriate staffing levels. The Fabrication Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. The Manager ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adheres to approved budgets. Additionally, the Fabrication Manager may fill additional roles as needed and directed including, but not limited to, roles such as supporting other departments.

Job Description:

Job descriptions establish expectations and performance benchmarks and always include three (3) main parts as a minimum; 1. Key Duties, 2. Key Responsibilities and 3. Key Qualifications.

1. Key Duties:

Job duties are the major or most important tasks to be performed by this position. The duties must be clear and specific of the work tasks to be performed and must include the periodic schedule that is required for each task such as continuous, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or on an annual basis.

a. Report for work on time, every time.

b. Effectively and efficiently manage the fabrication of the required daily/weekly/monthly targets in line with customer specifications, meeting quality and delivery expectations, minimizing costs where possible and ensure the required best working practices are maintained at all times.

c. Attend various meetings and give direction/communicate instructions

d. Support the Fabrication Supervisor in balancing workload and available resources.

e. Address employee issues and/or grievances and administer corrective actions that benefit the employee and company in the best possible way.

f. Carry out employee suspensions and terminations, when necessary, following disciplinary action policy guidelines.

g. Conduct Interviews when hiring for the Fabrication Department.

h. Process payroll biweekly.

i. Assists with issues on the floor.

j. Oversee supervisors work performance

k. Other duties as required.

2. Key Responsibilities:

Job responsibilities are what this organization uses to define the work that needs to be performed by the position in a role and the functions, or a list of the burdens of obligations, the position is held accountable for that are within the position’s power and authority to control and manage.

a. Employee must be responsible for their own Safety.

b. Manager must be responsible for all subordinate employee’s Safety.

c. Employee must read and fully understand the latest version of the Electronic Power Design, Inc. Employee Manual available on the PayChex website portal and in the Human Resources office.

d. Define and fulfill target goals for quality Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for the department.

e. Review personnel performance to determine individuals most suited for promotion.

f. Organizing workflow to meet specifications and deadlines.

g. Ensure that all supervisors are completing daily time balancing in the ERP system.

h. Ensure that all supervisors are enforcing accurate job labor entry.

i. Ensure that all supervisors are enforcing that fabrication workers complete work orders in the ERP system in real time as completed.

j. Ensure that the fabrication planning team is analyzing actual time data and comparing to defined time estimates.

i. Keep time estimates accurate.

ii. Investigate deviations from normal trends.

iii. Define and roll out time value improvement initiatives.

k. Responsible for fabrication scheduling and level loading.

i. Prepare time values for each scheduled order to determine work cell loading.

ii. Pull orders forward to fill loading gaps. Arrange start dates based on time values to level load for Sheetmetal and BusBar.

l. Responsible for monitoring the status of parts to determine when orders may be released to Sheetmetal and BusBar.

i. If the material status prohibits on-time fabrications start, responsible to escalate to responsible departments and to inform Project Management.

ii. Work with responsible departments to resolve shortages and update the scheduled fabrication start dates accordingly.

m. Responsible for monitoring the status and process of scrap metal for BusBar and Sheetmetal.

n. Ensure that the Supervisor has clearly communicated the Daily Work Expectations to all Work Groups.

o. Ensure that all resources are made available to the Supervisor and Work Groups Leads to achieve their Daily Work Expectations.

p. Resolve any and all obstacles that could potentially obstruct and/or prevent Daily Work Expectations from being met; which as of January 2021, are 8 to 10 sections of QED2 switchboards manufactured in each Work Area each day.

q. Manage Workflow Progress of all sections of QED2 product flowing normally throughout the fabrication area.

i. Manage and set aside any problematic sections of QED2 to prevent Workflow Progress of other sections flowing normally throughout the fabrication area.

ii. Assign SWAT Team Supervisor to identify all corrective actions necessary to expeditiously complete problematic sections of QED2 outside the normal workflow of the unimpeded fabrication activities.

iii. Report to Sr. Management status of Fabrication SWAT Team schedules, showstoppers and action items suggested to clear showstoppers.

r. Monitor normal Fabrication Workflow and resolve all issues.

s. Ensure output meets quality standards.

t. Determine amount of necessary resources while properly managing overtime within budgets.

u. Network with other management to formulate objectives and understand requirements.

v. Determine and implement improvements to the fabrication process.

w. Analyze fabrication and quality control to detect and correct problems.

x. Maintain a safe and organized work area at all times, and report all potentially hazardous equipment, conditions, or activities.

y. Must maintain a professional appearance in accordance with company policy.

3. Key Qualifications:

There may be a difference between the skills required to get the job and the skills required to perform the job. For example, even if our company requires candidates to have an engineering degree as a Prerequisite before our company hires them, the candidate may still need to be trained on the characteristics of the product and the tools used to produce the product. Therefore, the Job Description should also always identify the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) that each person needs to be successful in their job.

b. A list of required Prerequisites

i. Education

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

2. Some college experience or associates degree/certificate preferred.

ii. Training Certifications

iii. Applicable Experience

1. 5+ years’ experience in fabrication or manufacturing plant operations.

2. 3+ years’ supervisor experience.

3. Experience with Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint), ERP Systems and menu-based software.

4. Experience in reporting and developing policies.

c. A list of required Knowledge

i. Knowledge of product types related to the company. This includes but is not limited to Electrical Switchboards, Motor Control Centers, Variable Speed Drives, PLC Control Systems, and Industrial Control Panels as well as material handling equipment and forklifts.

ii. Excellent and topical knowledge of Quality Management Systems in accordance with ISO9001 standards.

d. A list of required Skills
