Full Job Description

CONTROLLER

Reports To: Co-Founder

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY: As a key member of the leadership team in the organization, the Controller is the top finance and operations executive primarily responsible for leading the company or organization while making major financial decisions for the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Act as financial and operations leader of the organization when communicating with investors, vendors, stockholders, government entities and the general public.
Oversee the financial operations of the company, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Manage the balance sheet reconciliation process to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Develop and implement investment strategies to maximize returns on company funds.
Supervise the Accounting Manager, Staff Accountant, and accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring timely and accurate processing of transactions.
Prepare and analyze financial statements, providing insights and recommendations to senior management.
Monitor and control costs to ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines.
Conduct general ledger reconciliation to ensure accuracy of financial records.
Ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Manage the revenue recognition process to ensure proper recording and reporting of revenue.
Create accounting strategies to maximize profits.
Set up budgets within the system to compare actuals to plan on a regular basis.
Manage payroll and taxes, including all mandatory reporting at state and federal level.
Regularly examine financial statements and ensure they are accurate and free of any errors.
Organize and update financial records; monitor all bookkeeping/accounting.
Analyze accounts and suggest improvements to reduce costs and increase profits.
Make sure all financial data adheres to current tax laws and regulations.
Keep company accounts information confidential.
Stay abreast of cannabis industry changes and current tax/accounting laws.
Prepare, manage, and present monthly reports and presentations to the Board and senior leaders.
Act as a liaison to outside auditors
Under the oversight of the Board and Co-Founders, lead the development of the organization's long- and short-term business strategies.
Negotiate and/or approve agreements and contracts for the organization.
Responsible for working with other department to achieve and surpass sales, profitability, cash flow and business goals and objectives.
Dedication to building and growing a strong and stable workforce
Responsible for quarterly investor newsletter and communication with shareholder base
Business Intelligence - collect and analyze data related to industry supply/demand dynamics, competitive landscape, pricing trends, regulatory environment, and valuation metrics of listed US operators.
Establish and maintain relationships with capital market firms.
Maintain pro forma models of individual entities.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics and/or accounting discipline required. MBA preferred.
Minimum of seven (7) years in finance, accounting, and operations leadership position(s).
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in medical or recreational cannabis industry highly preferred.
Understanding of invoicing, manifesting, logistics and distribution within the cannabis industry.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Outstanding organizational, leadership and persuasion abilities, including the ability to recognize and cultivate rising talent.
Excellent interpersonal, presentation and public speaking skills, both practiced and impromptu
Ability to present the company and its products publicly comfortably and energetically.
Ability to research, manipulate and synthesize large amounts of data.
Strong problem-solving ability, with a significant sense of ownership and accountability for one’s work.
Methodical approach to work, with a high level of organizational skill and the ability to produce concise, informative reports and financial statements.
Ability to work independently and in concert with internal counterparts.
High-level understanding of all business functions such as IT, HR, Finance, Marketing, Logistics, etc.
Aptitude in sound decision-making and problem-solving in high pressure situations
Skilled in Microsoft suite; proficient in complex accounting systems
Excellent financial and analytical abilities with high attention to detail
Proficiency in financial statement preparation and analysis
Advanced Excel skills for data analysis and modeling
Ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
Must comply with all legal or company regulations for working in the industry.
It is understood that to be effective as VP Finance, a high amount of travel may be required to our facilities in Missouri, California and/or Massachusetts.
